Public Defender Investigator - Racine Trial Office

Location: Racine Trial Office, 212 4th St, Suite 200, Racine, WI 53403.

About the role

The Public Defender Investigator (PDI) plans and conducts investigations for staff trial attorneys, supporting the Office of the State Public Defender’s mission to provide high-quality, cost-effective representation to indigent clients and protect the rights of accused individuals.

Responsibilities

• Conduct professional-level criminal defense investigations, including complex witness location, detailed interviewing, and crime scene analysis.
• Write detailed, clear investigative reports using common office software (e.g., Google Docs, Microsoft Word).
• Assist in trial and court preparation, such as organizing exhibits, coordinating witnesses, serving subpoenas, and testifying.
• Communicate effectively and respectfully with diverse individuals from various ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.
• Testify effectively in court procedures.

Requirements

• Proficiency in writing detailed, clear investigative reports using common office software.
• Effective and respectful communication with diverse individuals from various ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.
• Knowledge of the criminal justice system or equivalent experience.
• Strong commitment to the mission and values of public defense.
• Possession of a valid Wisconsin driver’s license (must be maintained as a condition of employment).
• No criminal convictions that may allow impeachment of testimony.
• Eligibility to work in the U.S. (SPD does not sponsor work visas).

Qualifications

A well-qualified candidate will also have experience and/or training in:

• Conducting professional-level criminal defense investigations.
• Assisting in trial and court preparation (e.g., organizing exhibits, coordinating witnesses, serving subpoenas, testifying).
• Technological proficiency in evidence management or ability to learn new technologies.

Pay

Starting salary for the PDI will be between $22.95 and $28.00/hour (pay schedule-range 07-04). Starting salary for the PDI-Senior will be between $28.24 and $46.59/hour (pay schedule-range 07-03). Pay is set in accordance with the Compensation Plan and Wisconsin Administrative Code at the time of hire. Final selected candidates may be eligible for moving expense reimbursement.
