About the role
The Public Affairs Officer will be responsible for producing internal and external news and information products about the agency and its mission. Key tasks include content development, media relations, digital media management, strategic communications, outreach, and event support.
Responsibilities
- Develop, execute, and publish a high volume of public affairs deliverables written in AP Style with minimal errors.
- Manage media activities, including developing talking points, preparing staff for media engagements, writing news releases, and proactively pitching stories.
- Create tailored content for various social media platforms and provide photojournalist products for both social media and public facing websites.
- Lead communications planning and product development for key agency initiatives, ensuring all public-facing information is accurate and up-to-date.
- Provide public affairs support for external conferences, academic outreach, and other community relations events.
- Respond to requests for advice and assistance in all matters or activities relative to proper community outreach procedures.
- Plan, coordinate, and execute high-level external events/campaigns, providing support to visit dry runs, read ahead materials, prep packages, placemats, presentations, and briefing material.
- Engage high-level military and civilian, foreign, and domestic visits/functions, ceremonies and special events hosted by leadership.
- Support the Geospatial Intelligence Hall of Fame Award Program, including publicizing the call for nominations, processing and consolidating nomination packages, and serving as Secretary to the Hall of Fame Selection Board.
- Plan, publicize, and oversee the annual awards program.
Qualifications
- Active TS/SCI with Polygraph is required.
- A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in a public affairs, public relations, or journalism role. Alternatively, 8+ years of direct public affairs or journalism experience.
- Demonstrated experience drafting press materials and responding to routine inquiries.
- Proven ability to write and produce content for a variety of platforms, such as websites, social media, and internal communications.
- Experience coordinating or supporting the logistics for public events, meetings, or conferences.
- The ability to build effective working relationships with internal colleagues and community partners.
- The ability to work independently on assigned tasks while also functioning as a collaborative and reliable team member.
- Proficiency in managing professional social media accounts and using them to engage audiences and disseminate information.
- Strong writing, editing, and presentation skills, with the ability to translate complex information into clear, accessible language.
- Experience managing smaller projects from start to finish, including coordinating with multiple stakeholders to meet deadlines.
- The ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and respond effectively to shifting priorities and time-sensitive requests.
