About the Role

Amherst College invites applications for a Pub Staff/Bartender (Casual Position). This part-time, academic-year (42 weeks) role is committed to delivering exceptional customer service and creating a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for the Amherst College community. Reporting to the Pub Manager, the position supports pub operations, front-of-house hospitality, and food and beverage service during the academic year.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily pub operations, including responsible alcohol service, point-of-sale transactions, and general front-of-house hospitality.
  • Prepare and serve beverages in accordance with state laws, local regulations, and campus alcohol policies.
  • Ensure a high standard of customer service that makes all campus community members and guests feel included, respected, and welcomed.
  • Restock inventory, verify delivery shipments, and monitor stock levels of beverages, food, paper goods, and cleaning supplies.
  • Maintain a clean bar and seating area, remove trash and recycling, and sweep and mop floors before, during, and after shifts.
  • Report maintenance or facility issues to the Pub Manager promptly.
  • Strictly verify identification to prevent underage service and enforce responsible hospitality/de-escalation practices.
  • Serve as a key safety liaison during operating hours, collaborating with Campus Safety when necessary to ensure guest well-being.
  • Effectively and respectfully communicate with the community and coworkers, including operational needs and concerns.
  • Stay up to date on college communications via the Amherst College email account.
  • Communicate schedule needs and changes in a timely and effective manner.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience.
  • Must be able to legally serve alcohol in Massachusetts.
  • Certifications: ServSafe Alcohol, TIPs (Training for Intervention Procedures), or ability to obtain certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Must successfully complete reference and background checks, including a Massachusetts CORI check.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to lift and maneuver up to 25 lbs. (e.g., kegs, beer cases, ice buckets). Pre-employment physical/lift test is required.
  • Work Schedule: Must be available to work non-traditional hours, including late evenings and weekends during the 42-week academic year.
  • Designated as an essential staff member for evening operational integrity within the facility.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience working in a higher education campus center, student union, or pub environment.
  • Experience supervising or mentoring student staff or student volunteers.
  • Active certification in CPR/First Aid.

Pay

The expected salary range for this job opportunity is $20.00-23.00 per hour. The salary offered will vary based on a number of factors, including but not limited to relevant education, training, and experience, tenure status, and other nondiscriminatory business considerations.

Schedule

This is a part-time, academic-year (42 weeks) position with non-traditional hours, including late evenings and weekends.
