PT.SpEd. Teacher Aide (Life Skills Classroom)

About the role

Responsibilities

• Provides instructional support to special education teacher
• Affords assistance in teaching daily living skills, social skills, leisure-time activity skills, specific self-help skills, community access and mobility skills
• Encourages and reinforces students, building self-image and helping them to be responsible
• Affords assistance with student behavior management
• Offers instruction to students, under direction of special education teacher
• Affords assistance with clerical duties
• Affords supervision and assistance during class and times between classes
• Affords assistance with feeding, personal hygiene, toileting, diapering, changing clothes, etc. Can require the lifting, positioning and carrying of students
• Affords assistance with group and club participation during school hours
• Affords assistance with planning and supervising field trips and other off-campus activities
• Follows teacher's program when working with students
• Tracks student progress
• Collects student behavioral data
• Consistently follows behavior system and classroom management program
• Tutors students in small groups with basic reading and math skills
• Maintains positive working relationships with students and staff
• Maintains confidentiality
• Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent required
• Associate Degree, 48 semester hours of college credit or must have passed the Para-Pro Test or be willing to take and pass the Para-Pro Test immediately upon hire
• Successful experience working with children at risk
• Successful experience as an at-risk teaching assistant
