PT Outbound Freight Handler
About the role
As a PT Outbound Freight Handler, you will perform essential tasks such as loading and unloading freight, preparing trailers, using proper lifting techniques, selecting and using appropriate handling equipment, weighing and dimensioning shipments, planning cube utilization, counting and inspecting freight, verifying hazardous materials, and properly blocking and bracing freight.
Responsibilities
- Load and unload freight onto and off of equipment
- Aid in the recoupment of damaged freight
- Clean and inspect trailers before loading freight
- Use safe lifting techniques to load and unload freight
- Select and use proper freight handling equipment including forklifts, hand trucks, drum trucks, pallet jacks, rollers, and other available equipment
- Weigh and dimension shipments to ensure proper classification, freight rating, and safe handling
- Plan cube utilization and weight distribution when loading freight
- Count and inspect the condition of freight, documenting any shortages or damage
- Review freight bills for special instructions
- Check manifests for existing exceptions and compare labels and destination codes on manifests to freight bills
- Verify special instructions, weight distributions on headloads, and headloads against freight bills when loading freight
- Verify proper placarding for hazardous materials and ensure correct product descriptions are listed
- Properly block and brace freight to prevent shifting during transport
Requirements
We prefer candidates who have a High School Diploma or GED, but will consider candidates with equivalent certifications. Prior experience as a Forklift Operator, Dock or Warehouse Worker, or Material Handler is preferred, as is a Forklift Certification. Candidates must be able to pass a background check and alcohol/drug testing.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate should have the ability to safely operate forklifts and other handling equipment, as well as the physical strength and dexterity to lift and move heavy objects. Knowledge of freight handling procedures and safety protocols is essential.
Skills
Proficiency in using various types of freight handling equipment, attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are key requirements for this position.
