Psychology Fellow

About the role

The Psychology Fellow will receive advanced clinical training in health psychology within a multidisciplinary academic medical center. The fellowship emphasizes evidence-based psychological assessment and intervention for adults coping with complex medical conditions, with a particular focus on patients diagnosed with head and neck cancers. The fellow will work collaboratively with physicians, nurses, speech-language pathologists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes through integrated behavioral health services. In addition to direct clinical care, fellows will participate in didactic training, program development initiatives, education, and outreach activities.

Responsibilities

• Clinical Training
  • Provide evidence-based individual and group psychotherapy to medical patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Conduct psychological assessments, including distress screening and pre-surgical psychosocial evaluations.
  • Participate in clinical services, including consult-liaison rounds and multidisciplinary clinics.
• Didactic Learning & Supervision
  • Receive a minimum of two hours of individual supervision each week from experienced psychologists.
  • Attend at least two hours of weekly didactic training covering diagnosis-specific topics, interdisciplinary care, and professional competencies.
  • Participate in case conferences, grand rounds, and journal clubs with psychology and medical teams.
• Program Development
  • Optimize distress screening processes in clinic settings and during radiation treatment visits in alignment with Commission on Cancer requirements.
  • Conduct pre-surgical psychosocial evaluations to enhance surgical outcomes through identification and mitigation of modifiable psychosocial risk factors.
• Education & Outreach
  • Provide consultation to healthcare staff, including medical residents, nursing teams, speech-language pathologists, and social workers regarding patients' behavioral health needs.
  • Co-lead psychoeducational groups for patients and families.
  • Participate in community outreach and patient advocacy events focused on health and wellness.

Requirements

• Doctoral degree (PhD or PsyD) in Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, or Health Psychology from an APA- or CPA-accredited program.
• Completion of an APA-accredited internship prior to fellowship start date.
• Demonstrated interest and experience in health psychology and/or working with individuals managing chronic or complex medical conditions.
• Strong clinical skills in psychotherapy and psychological assessment.
• Research experience supporting clinical intervention development, program evaluation, or outcomes research.
• Eligibility for licensure in the State of Illinois.

Pay

Pay Range: $60,320.00. Actual compensation will fall within the range but may vary based on factors such as experience, qualifications, education, location, licensure, certification requirements, and comparisons to colleagues in similar roles.
