Psychology Adjunct Instructor

Paul D. Camp Community College is a small 2-year college in Southeast Virginia with campuses in Franklin and Suffolk, and a center in Smithfield. The college offers associate degrees, certificates, and career studies certificates in transfer and career/technical programs; credit and non-credit workforce services; special interest classes; summer classes for youth; dual enrollment for high school students; online courses; and developmental studies classes.

About the role

This is a part-time adjunct instructor position teaching Psychology courses. Teaching responsibilities may include on-campus, off-campus, day, evening, distance learning, and weekend classes. Adjunct instructors may teach a maximum of 12 workload credits in each fall and spring term, and 8 workload credits in the summer term.

Work schedule may include day, evening, or weekend hours as needed during the academic year.

Responsibilities

• Create a learning environment that facilitates students’ acquisition of knowledge and skills in Psychology through instructional design, delivery, effectiveness, and expertise.
• Engage in scholarly and creative activity, which may include conference attendance, presentations, participation in professional organizations, academic coursework, research, publications, and grant activity.
• Perform institutional responsibilities such as participating in the college’s development and evaluation plan for part-time teaching faculty, attending required meetings, adhering to college and VCCS policies, and maintaining collegial working relationships.
• Provide service through quality participation and commitment to students, college, and/or community organizations.
• Incorporate formative and summative assessment measures to evaluate and enhance student learning.
• Utilize various technologies for communication, organization of data, course materials, and presentations.
• Travel between campus locations (Franklin, Suffolk, and Smithfield) as needed.

Requirements

• Minimum of a master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with 18 graduate semester hours in Psychology.
• Ability to design and implement curricula aligned with student educational goals.
• Ability to develop and adapt teaching strategies for diverse student backgrounds and academic competencies.
• Knowledge of methods to effectively teach Psychology online.
• Experience with teaching strategies that promote student success.
• Strong oral and written communication skills for group and one-on-one settings.
• Commitment to staying current and improving knowledge in the discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

• Online teaching certification or experience.
• Community college or four-year college teaching experience.
• Experience with alternative delivery methods (online, hybrid, hyflex, content software, web enhancements).
• Willingness to incorporate AI into Psychology education.
• Experience incorporating technology into education.
• Ability to teach in-person classes during daytime hours.

Pay

$793 per credit hour.
