About the role

Central State Hospital (CSH) is a 277-bed Joint Commission accredited psychiatric inpatient facility located in Petersburg, Virginia. CSH has proudly been serving citizens of the Commonwealth since 1870, when it opened as the first psychiatric hospital in the country dedicated to the treatment of African Americans. A new and modern CSH is currently under construction on the same property, with a scheduled completion date of August 2027. CSH maintains the only maximum-security treatment facility in the state (111 beds) and also has 166 beds for individuals in the community or criminal justice system.

This position requires participation in the MOD second on-call coverage.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, treatment, and ongoing clinical care for patients with complex behavioral health needs.
  • Lead an interdisciplinary treatment team and ensure patient care aligns with standards of care, hospital policies, and applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Develop and revise individualized treatment plans.
  • Prescribe and monitor medications, obtain informed consent, and address adverse effects.
  • Complete timely and accurate medical and psychiatric documentation.
  • Participate in admission evaluations, court proceedings, on-call coverage, and discharge planning.
  • Collaborate with patients, families, community services boards, nursing, psychology, social work, rehabilitation, and other professionals to promote recovery and timely discharge.
  • Support patient safety and seclusion/restraint reduction efforts.
  • Participate in quality improvement and Medical Staff activities.
  • Maintain required licensure, DEA registration, CME, and training requirements.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, respect, empathy, and a commitment to patient-centered, recovery-oriented care.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree.
  • Successful completion of an accredited or approved residency training program in Psychiatry.
  • Valid, unrestricted license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Board certification or board eligibility in Psychiatry.
  • Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Board Certification in Psychiatry.

Hiring range: $266,354 – $335,000.
