Maricopa County Correctional Health Services is seeking a Psychiatrist to provide critical mental health care to one of the most underserved populations in our community. For many individuals in the justice system, this may be their first opportunity to receive a proper diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing psychiatric support. As a Psychiatrist, you will play a vital role in transforming lives by providing compassionate, evidence-based care to justice-involved individuals. You will collaborate with a dedicated interdisciplinary team to deliver integrated healthcare and address the complex behavioral health needs of patients navigating the correctional system. In this role, you will lead psychopharmacological treatment and help expand access to psychiatric care for a population that is often overlooked within the field.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate new admissions to reach a diagnosis and treat identified mental illness
• Re-evaluate patients under care to refine diagnosis and treatment as indicated
• Prescribe medications following the CHS Pharmacy Formulary
• Document evaluation, treatment, and other patient interactions clearly and thoroughly, and in compliance with licensure and accreditation requirements
• Participate in the management of patients who require involuntary treatment, including but not limited to initiating Court-ordered evaluation, participating in the Psychiatric Medication Review Board, and ordering the administration of involuntary medications as indicated
• Participate as a member of the Mental Health Interdisciplinary Treatment team, assist the team in developing Special Needs Treatment Plans, and coordinate with the Forensic Team for any patients in a forensic program
• Participate in the development of psychiatric protocols and clinical practice guidelines to ensure medical services are provided in a cost-effective manner that is consistent with psychiatric standards and appropriate for the correctional setting
• Assist with preparation for licensure and accreditation surveys
• Maintain licensure, certifications, and other credentialing as indicated

Requirements

• Three years of experience in psychiatric evaluation and treatment
• Doctoral degree in Medicine (MD, DO)
• Completed accredited Residency Program in Psychiatry
• Current license as a Psychiatrist in the State of Arizona issued by the State of Arizona Medical Board

Qualifications

• Experience working with incarcerated individuals
• Experience working with mentally ill patients in an institutional environment
• Clozapine REMS certified
• Suboxone waiver

Schedule

This position offers flexible scheduling options, including the potential for four 10-hour shifts or five 8-hour shifts, with start times based on business needs. Position includes day or night shift work, which may include weekends and holidays. Travel or floating to various clinical locations is required within a 5-mile radius.

Working Conditions

• Must be able to work inside a jail and stand, walk, and bend for extended periods of time throughout the shift while accurately handling a high volume of work, communicating with a culturally diverse patient population, and adapting to frequent changes, interruptions, and unscheduled tasks
• Must be able to respond to emergencies
• Must maintain CPR certification and get on the floor to perform CPR/chest compressions, push medical equipment, climb stairs, and lift patients on a gurney
• Must be able to pass a fingerprint background check and maintain MCSO jail access
• CPR certification is required upon hire
• Physician Dispensing Certificate Registration is required upon hire
