Psychiatrist

We are seeking an experienced, skilled, and licensed Psychiatrist to provide direct comprehensive, quality psychiatric treatment to adults with severe and persistent mental illnesses. The incumbent will serve as the clinical supervisor of the multidisciplinary treatment team and supervise psychologists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, psychiatric physician assistants, psychiatry residents, and other trainees.

About the Role

The Metro Boston Mental Health Units (MBMHU) at Lemuel Shattuck Hospital manages and staffs 115 psychiatric beds across 5 units. Patients are admitted from other hospitals, Bridgewater State Hospital, and the courts for evaluations. The hospital provides a range of services, including surgery, oncology, ventilator care, intensive care, and various specialty clinics.

The Department of Mental Health assures and provides access to services and supports to meet the mental health needs of individuals of all ages, enabling them to live, work, and participate in their communities.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the clinical supervisor of the multidisciplinary treatment team and supervisor of psychologists on the assigned unit.
• Supervise Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners, Psychiatric Physician Assistants, Psychiatry Residents, and other trainees.
• Provide comprehensive, quality psychiatric services, including timely completion of admission evaluations (within 24 hours or by the next business day), ongoing assessments, and treatment documentation at least weekly in progress notes.
• Meet regularly with patients and the treatment team; attend clinical rounds on the inpatient unit.
• Order appropriate consultations and laboratory studies; document results in progress notes.
• Prepare and develop the multidisciplinary treatment plan and update it at required intervals and as clinically necessary.
• Coordinate and complete all required risk assessments per DMH policy.
• Obtain and document informed consent; apply for guardianships if patient capacity is in question.
• Track and monitor the legal status of patients; apply for commitments/guardianships when necessary.
• Oversee the discharge plan and coordinate with outpatient psychiatric providers to ensure continuity of care.
• Attend all departmental meetings and assigned committee meetings.

Requirements

• At least three years of residency training in a recognized program of psychiatry.
• Board eligible with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) and/or certified by ABPN.
• Current and valid registration as a Physician under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine.
• Current and valid motor vehicle driver’s license at a class level specific to assignment.
• Skilled in understanding, diagnosing, and treating serious mental illness.
• Ability to supervise and coordinate the efforts of others in accomplishing work objectives.
• Talent for establishing and maintaining positive, respectful, and professional relationships with patients, staff, and family members.
• Ability to assess information accurately and communicate it effectively, both verbally and in writing.
• Capacity to work collaboratively to achieve programmatic and agency goals.
• Professional experience treating patients with severe mental illness, trauma, and substance use disorders.
• Understanding of psychiatric conditions and their treatment, including the ability to assess, diagnose, and prescribe or supervise treatment while conforming to regulatory standards and applicable laws.

Preferred Qualifications

• Record of experience and expertise in inpatient care of patients with serious mental illness, forensic involvement, and intermediate care facility (or equivalent) experience.
• Demonstrated capacity to work cooperatively within an interdisciplinary team and with other clinical staff.
• Competence in maintaining accurate records and handling confidential information discreetly.
• Proficiency in basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams, and Outlook.
• Bilingual or multilingual fluency, given the population served.

Pay

Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate’s years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure. For bargaining unit positions, compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
