About the Role

The incumbent will carry out psychiatric examinations and assessments at OASAS Addiction Treatment Centers (ATCs), which are tobacco and vape-free facilities. The role involves working within a trauma-informed Sanctuary Model environment, supporting commitments to non-violence, emotional intelligence, democracy, open communication, social responsibility, social learning, and growth & change.

Responsibilities

• Perform psychiatric examinations and assessments, and make diagnoses.
• Write physician’s orders and determine the need for consultations with external psychiatric personnel.
• Provide individual patient education and participate in treatment team meetings with other clinical staff.
• Respond to psychiatric emergencies and carry out discharge planning and post-discharge referrals.
• Engage in quality improvement activities.
• Supervise a Nurse Practitioner in Psychiatry, if applicable.
• Utilize a computerized patient record system.
• Demonstrate flexibility to assist at other ATCs within the region as needed.
• Perform other job-related tasks as assigned.

Requirements

• Must possess a license and current registration to practice medicine in New York State.
• For Psychiatrist 2: Certification in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN).
• For Psychiatrist 1: Completion of a training program in psychiatry approved by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN).
• Eligibility and maintenance of full and unconditional participation in the Medicaid and Medicare programs. Failure to maintain licensure, certification, or Medicaid/Medicare eligibility will result in termination of employment.
• Computer skills are required.

Background Investigation

• Prospective appointees will be checked against the Staff Exclusion List (SEL) maintained by the Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs. Those found responsible for serious or repeated acts of abuse or neglect may be barred from appointment.
• Criminal Background Check (CBC) including State and federal Criminal History Record Checks. All convictions must be reported; felony or misdemeanor convictions, or falsified/omitted information on the application, may bar appointment or result in removal after appointment.
• Screening against the Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR). Prospective employees whose names appear on the SCR may be barred from appointment.
• Fingerprinting may be required, and prospective employees may need to pay associated fees.

Pay

The salary range reflects the full range for this graded position, factoring in annual performance advances based on satisfactory annual performance reviews. Candidates with no previous State service will begin at the hiring rate (starting rate of the salary range), plus any applicable Location Pay, Geographic Pay, or Shift Pay differentials. Promotion salaries are calculated in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules, and negotiated union contracts.
