Psychiatric Technician

About the Role

Provides direct youth care and supervision to assigned population, including maintenance of a therapeutic milieu using the positive components (effective praise and proactive teaching) of the Psychoeducational Model of treatment (PEM). Ensures a safe environment and monitors basic physical needs while serving as a role model for ethical behavior and promoting the Mission, Vision, and Values of Boys Town National Research Hospital.

Part-time positions available: Evening shift with every other weekend required, or Night shift with every other weekend required.

Responsibilities

• Provides consistent monitoring and safety of youth in all program and non-program areas.
• Follows policies and procedures for high-risk areas such as bathrooms, overnight, time-out, outings, and seclusion.
• Complies with youth physical intervention (personal restraint) policies during emergency safety situations.
• Adheres to hospital, program, state, Medicaid, and Joint Commission guidelines for safety.
• Implements the positive components of the PEM (effective praise and proactive teaching) consistently and effectively.
• Models appropriate social and life skills for youth.
• Documents youth behavior and activity in behaviorally specific language, meeting all timelines and guidelines.
• Builds trusting and supportive relationships with youth through fairness, concern, and professionalism.
• Actively participates in group activities, maintaining appropriate boundaries.
• Displays professionalism through honesty, integrity, adherence to policies, effective communication, and productivity.
• Implements a proactive approach to decision-making and responds effectively to concerns or crises.
• Ensures consistent implementation of all policies, procedures, and scheduled expectations.
• Provides direct feedback to co-workers and supervisors to ensure high-quality care and services.
• Assists in staff and program development, taking initiative to improve the program.
• Follows the chain of command and communicates questions or concerns professionally.
• Provides patient care and education according to the patient population served.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Must complete and maintain certification in CPR, PEM, and a nationally recognized personal restraint model during pre-service training.
• Must demonstrate competency in a nationally recognized personal restraint model.
• Minimum age of 20 years required.
• Up to date with all immunizations per Employee Health.

Preferred Qualifications

• Some college credit preferred.
• Experience working with children preferred.

• Ability to work under adverse conditions, including constant interruptions, inappropriate behaviors, and potential verbal or physical threats from youth.
• Ability to resolve conflict in crisis situations.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work with diverse professional staff, youth, and co-workers.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to affect positive change and meet program competencies (minimum 2.0 evaluation score at one year).
• Ability to be trained and pass competencies in Registered Medication Administration (for specified programs).
• Excellent interpersonal skills.

Physical Requirements

• Light to medium work, including occasional squatting, kneeling, crawling, and lying on the ground to restrain a child or simulate restraint (up to 3 minutes).
• Occasional forceful exertion of the upper extremities (up to 50 lbs of static force) during restraints.
• Variable walking and standing throughout the day.
• Subject to outside and inside environmental conditions, including constant interruptions and potential verbal or physical threats from youth.
