About the Role
This is the entry-level classification in the Psychiatric Social Worker series. The Psychiatric Social Worker 1 provides direct psychiatric social work services, including individual, group, and family therapy, in mental health facilities, correctional institutions, and substance use treatment programs. This role focuses on direct patient care and case management without supervisory responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- Conducts biopsychosocial assessments and develops individualized care plans.
- Provides individual, group, and family therapy to address psychosocial challenges.
- Facilitates discharge planning and connects patients with community resources.
- Maintains detailed records, progress notes, and treatment summaries.
- Evaluates patient needs, adjusts care plans, and resolves service delivery challenges.
- Engages with families, courts, and external agencies to support patient care.
- Works with healthcare teams to ensure comprehensive treatment approaches.
- Provides guidance to less experienced staff and stays updated on best practices.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in social work from an accredited college or university.
- At least one of the following at the time of appointment (must be maintained during employment):
- Master’s degree in social work from a program approved by the Council on Social Work Education;
- Doctoral or Ph.D. in social work; or
- Current master of social work certificate or independent practitioner of social work license (TCA 63-23-102 and 63-23-103).
- Valid driver’s license with a clean record for the past five years (no DUI, reckless driving, license suspension for moving violations, or more than 4 moving violations).
