About the role
The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner provides comprehensive, professional, culturally, linguistically, and age-appropriate care in a correctional setting. This position diagnoses, conducts therapy, and prescribes medication for patients with psychiatric disorders, medical organic brain disorders, or substance abuse problems.
This is a full-time, 40-hour weekly position with the Department of Corrections.

Responsibilities
- Provide psychiatric services, psychosocial and physical assessments, treatment plans, and manage patient care
- Serve as a member of the multidisciplinary team, consult on mental health issues, and collaborate with medical providers
- Establish diagnoses, order and interpret studies, perform and monitor therapeutic procedures, and manage follow-up care
- Prescribe and regulate medications based on patient healthcare needs
- Record and document health appraisal data accurately and timely to maintain and coordinate required services
- Communicate findings of mental healthcare assessments and diagnostic tests to patients, physicians, and other healthcare providers
- Develop, provide, and systematically re-evaluate patient treatment plans
- Make appropriate referrals when services fall outside the DOC Clinical Services scope of practice for Behavioral Health
- Provide assessment, consultation, and brief intervention for psychological/psychiatric problems or disorders
- Maintain documentation of patient encounters, including progress notes, assessment/diagnostic information, and treatment planning
- Maintain necessary NP registration/licensure as required by South Dakota state law
- Ensure adherence to organizational policies regarding patient confidentiality and HIPAA
- Perform other assigned tasks and duties
Requirements
- Licensed to practice as a Certified Nurse Practitioner in South Dakota
- Certified by ANCC or ANA as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner
- Current and valid DEA licensure
- Ability to provide direct patient care to offenders
- Skilled in office-based procedures
- Ability to maintain professionalism in a complex environment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders
- Ability to read, comprehend, and communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing
- Ability to create accessible documents and technical content following plain language guidelines
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience providing medical care in a correctional environment
- Previous experience working as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)
- Experience managing mental health conditions as a mid-level provider
Conditions of Employment
- Successful completion of a background investigation, urine drug screen (UDS), and ability to perform essential job functions
- Opportunity to carry Oleoresin Capsicum (OC/pepper spray) with required direct (level 1) exposure training if desired
- Successful completion of a written and practical self-defense exam and CPR certification (AHA guidelines)
- Physical ability to complete the practical self-defense exam, including:
- Lifting arms above head and kicking as high as own waist
- Stabilizing another person for a controlled takedown
- Using arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows
- Withstanding impact on own body from strikes/blows
- Rotating body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking or defensive tactics
- Getting down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions
- TB (tuberculosis) screening required upon hire
- Submission of a Curriculum Vitae with the application
- Exempt from the Civil Service Act
- Background investigation and abuse/neglect screening required
- Offers contingent upon successful completion of a drug screening
- Verification of identity and eligibility to work in the United States (Form I-9 and E-Verify)
