About the role

School nursing practice requires the combination of professional clinical nursing practice with a specialized component that promotes the health, well-being, social-emotional learning, and academic success of the school-age child in the least restrictive environment. The Hawaii Keiki (HK) Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner works within a School-Based Health Clinic and collaborates closely with:

• HK personnel – Registered Nurses (RNs), Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs), School Health Support Staff (SHSS), Behavioral Health Technicians (BHTs), Administration, and others;
• Hawaii Department of Education (HI DOE) school personnel – School Health Aides (SHAs), Teachers, Educational Assistants (EAs), Para-professional Tutors (PPTs), Administration, Office Staff, and others;
• HI DOE School-Based Behavioral Health (SBBH) personnel – Behavioral Health Specialists (BHSs), School Counselors, Clinical and School Psychologists, Social Workers (SWs), and others.

The role involves establishing a leadership position, providing training, clinical advice, consultation, and support to HK, school, and SBBH personnel. You will develop and deliver services to students with psychiatric-mental health or behavioral health challenges and refer them to school or community mental health services. Professional responsibilities include attending scheduled meetings during non-student days. This position is not tied to the school year and involves both telehealth and program requirements when DOE schools are closed.

Responsibilities

• Work collaboratively with HK, HI DOE, and SBBH personnel to address students' psychiatric-mental health and behavioral health needs.
• Provide leadership, training, clinical advising, consultation, and support to HK, school, and SBBH staff.
• Develop and deliver services for students with psychiatric-mental health or behavioral health challenges.
• Refer students to appropriate school or community mental health services.
• Attend scheduled meetings during non-student days.
• Fulfill telehealth and program requirements outside of the school year.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in Nursing with specialty training as a Child-Adolescent, Family, or Across the Lifespan Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) or Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) from an accredited school.
• Current, unencumbered APRN-Rx license in the state of Hawaii.
• Current Board Certification as a Child-Adolescent, Family, or Across the Lifespan PMHNP or PMHCNS from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or other nationally recognized board; or obtain active Board Certification by the start date if selected.
• Current BLS for Healthcare Provider certification.
• Experience with electronic health records and reporting.
• Experience as a Child-Adolescent, Family, or Across-the-lifespan PMHNP-BC, APRN-Rx, or PMHCNS-BC, APRN-Rx; or clinical experience within a PMHNP program and additional experience with children/adolescents as an FNP or DNP.
• Advanced computer skills and experience with telehealth platforms and electronic health record systems.
• Knowledge of HIPAA rules, regulations, and compliance.
• Knowledge of OSHA regulations for blood-borne pathogens.

Schedule

Full-time, 40 hours per week, primarily remote via telehealth with occasional in-person site visits and training required.
