Fairview is seeking a Psychiatric Assistant at M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina, MN. This casual position involves working every two weeks on Day, Evening, or Night shifts (8 hours) with weekend rotations as needed.

About the Role

Join the innovative EmPATH (Emergency Psychiatric Assessment, Treatment, and Healing) team at Southdale Hospital, where you'll support adults experiencing mental health crises. This role focuses on creating a safe, therapeutic environment alongside a multidisciplinary team dedicated to stabilization, healing, and recovery. Ideal for individuals passionate about behavioral health and making a meaningful impact during critical moments in patients' lives.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains safety on the behavioral services unit.
  • Conducts and documents checks on accountability sheets and restricted access items.
  • Performs room searches.
  • Uses de-escalation skills appropriately.
  • Responds to and participates in Behavioral Crisis Situations (BCS).
  • Manages the milieu by observing patients in the environment at all times.
  • Responds to and participates in CPR situations.
  • Performs basic patient care routines and procedures according to the treatment plan.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of signs/symptoms of diagnoses and usual interventions.
  • Delivers individual care, including Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and vital signs.
  • Participates in unit-specific routines and group/individual programming.
  • Documents using the DIAP method concisely.
  • Identifies and resolves problems as they occur.
  • Monitors and maintains a therapeutic milieu.
  • Participates in active involvement, observation, and intervention.
  • Contributes to the treatment team’s mission, goals, and plans.
  • Acts as a member of the multidisciplinary therapeutic team.
  • Communicates verbally in a timely, thorough, and professional manner.
  • Stays updated on Behavioral Services policies and procedures.
  • Adjusts care or service approaches to reflect developmental level and cultural differences.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Basic Life Support (American Heart Association or Red Cross) certification by the end of orientation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1 year of experience providing direct patient care.
  • 1 year of experience working with emotionally disturbed individuals.
  • 1 year of experience in Emergency Medicine.
  • 1 year of experience in Behavioral Health.
