Psychiatric Advanced Nurse Practitioner

About the role

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) seeks a Psychiatric Advanced Nurse Practitioner to join our team. This position is appointed by the Medical Director subject to the approval of the State Hospital Superintendent. The role involves assessing, planning, and providing comprehensive psychiatric patient care independently or in collaboration with other health care professionals.

Responsibilities

• Assesses, diagnoses, and treats psychiatric disorders under the supervision of a psychiatrist.
• Prescribes medications, including antipsychotics, and orders laboratory and diagnostic tests.
• Provides psychiatric care, including conducting rounds, leading Recovery Team Meetings, and participating in court hearings.
• Oversees and develops accurate and timely documentation, including annual summaries and physical restraint evaluations.
• Participates in the hospital-wide quality assessment and performance improvement program.
• Serves as a leader of the patient’s recovery team and represents the Medical Director in their absence.

Requirements

• Registered and certified as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse by the Texas Board of Nursing or a recognized compact state.
• Certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center or equivalent.
• Current registration certificate from the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).
• National Provider Identifier (NPI#).
• At least 2 years of clinical nursing experience, with one year as an APRN preferred.
• One year of experience in supervising or leading the work of others.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree or higher in nursing.
• Knowledge of psychiatric/nursing methods and procedures, including laws and ordinances governing mental health and hospital operations.
• Ability to interpret laboratory results and provide psychiatric care.
• Ability to supervise and lead the work of others.
• Ability to communicate effectively and prepare medical records.
• Ability to work independently and be flexible in carrying out assigned responsibilities.

Pay

$12,390.00 - $14,356.00 per month

Schedule

Day shift, up to 5% travel, occasional overtime, and potential for telemedicine involvement.
