About the role
The successful applicant will have a direct role in the design, engineering, and studies of protection systems for equipment on the bulk power system. This includes the protection of substations, transmission lines, generators, renewables, and distribution systems.
Responsibilities
- Involved in projects with our Electrical Studies, SCADA, and Protection (ESSP) team.
- Part of a growing organization that meets our clients' objectives and solves their challenges.
- Direct role in the design, engineering, and studies of protection systems for equipment on the bulk power system.
- Protection of substations, transmission lines, generators, renewables, and distribution systems.
- Lead teams on client projects to meet the scope, schedule, and budget.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers.
- Support infrequent onsite site visits to collect data and able to discuss project specifics at appropriate technical level for clients.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET accredited).
- 5 to 7 years of relevant post-education experience as an electrical engineer executing deliverables for Protective Relaying projects in power generation, transmission, and distribution at a utility or industrial scale.
- Engineer in Training Certification.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Engineering.
- Professional Engineering (PE) license or equivalent.
- Preference will be given to applicants with a proven history of completing similar projects in a consulting environment.
- Preference may be given to engineers with commissioning and testing experience, or strong skills in protecting equipment at high voltages (69kV and higher).
- Preference is also given to applicants with experience mentoring others and a willingness to do so.
Skills
- Familiarity, experience, or possibly even expertise with some of the following items:
- Symmetrical component analysis, protection philosophy development, relay settings, and integration with SCADA systems.
- Electrical model development, short circuit, time-current coordination, arc flash, NERC compliance, and event analysis.
- Data Acquisition: Support infrequent onsite site visits to collect data and able to discuss project specifics at appropriate technical level for clients.
- Industry Standards: Working knowledge or awareness of applicable industry practices for protection as outlined in IEEE, ANSI, or NERC PRC standards for design work.
- Organized: Flexibility to support a variety of project schedules to meet client needs and able to prioritize responsibilities effectively.
- Applicable software: AcSELerator Quickset, GEEnervista, ASPENOneliner, CAPE, SKM-PTW, ETAP, RSCAD.
- Applicable hardware: SEL, GE, Siemens, RTDS.

Pay
Expected Salary (New York Only): $94,300k a yr- $155,500k a yr
