Protection & Controls Engineer II

Responsibilities

  • Perform system disturbance analysis
  • Recommend protective relaying system enhancements or modifications
  • Ensure compliance with applicable NERC standards
  • Support a wide range of design modification projects
  • Complete field inspections, condition assessments, and equipment evaluations
  • Occasionally respond to emergencies outside of normal business hours
  • Coordinate cross-disciplinary activities for project development and execution
  • Select and apply codes, standards, and procedures appropriately
  • Perform inspections and evaluations to ensure engineering requirements and Authority specifications are satisfied
  • Provide technical leadership in state-of-the-art engineering and analytical techniques
  • Review designs, calculations, specifications, and reports produced by other engineers and consultants
  • Supervise maintenance department staff and contractors
  • Oversee the safety of employees
  • Review job packages and completed work to ensure completeness and accuracy

Requirements

  • Proficient in design, operation, and maintenance of Protection and Control systems
  • Working knowledge of protective relaying systems and their components
  • Ability to utilize communication systems including power line carrier, leased telephone circuits, microwave links, and fiber optic technology
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Collaborative and team-oriented with ability to build relationships with vendors and stakeholders
  • Ability to coordinate technical and commercial aspects of projects
  • Competent in engineering calculations, specifications, scopes of work, reports, and interdisciplinary design packages
  • Experience in Protective Relaying applied to Electrical Power Systems
  • Working experience with engineering software such as ASPEN and relay manufacturing software
  • Able to manage and prioritize multiple projects
  • Ability to develop complex engineering specifications and perform intricate studies

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent, from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum of six (6) years of related work experience preferred
  • New York State Engineer in Training certification preferred

The New York Power Authority is committed to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. The estimated salary range for this position is: $120,000-$145,000. The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidate's relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Schedule

Approximately 25% travel primarily within NY State.
