About the role
Power Engineering Services, a Quanta Services Company, is seeking a Protection & Control Designer to join our growing team. The ideal candidate will support the design and delivery of high-voltage substation projects for electric utilities, contractors, and developers.
Responsibilities
- Develop comprehensive protection and control design packages for high-voltage substations, including:
- Single-line diagrams
- Protection and control schematics
- Elementary and wiring diagrams
- SCADA and communications drawings
- Control house layouts
- Cable schedules
- Cable tray layouts
- Bills of material (BOMs)
- Perform engineering calculations and studies, including:
- AC auxiliary system sizing
- Battery sizing
- Voltage drop calculations
- Coordinate with engineers, designers, and other disciplines to ensure accurate and efficient project execution.
- Provide technical support during construction, respond to field questions, and assist with design revisions as needed.
- Deliver quality work while meeting project schedules, budgets, and client expectations.
Requirements
- Associate degree in Engineering Technology or a related technical discipline
- 6+ years of experience in protection and control design for utility substations
- Experience designing substations ranging from 15kV through 345kV
- Working knowledge of applicable IEEE, ANSI, and utility design standards
- Proficiency with AutoCAD; experience with MicroStation is a plus
- Experience with substation BIM design software such as Inventor, SDS-P4A, or Primtech is preferred
- Strong understanding of protection and control design principles, drafting standards, and construction practices
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
- Willingness to learn new technologies and design software as needed
