Position Overview
The Property Tax Accountant is responsible for managing the company’s property tax compliance, reporting, and planning activities. This role ensures timely and accurate filings/payments, supports audits, identifies tax savings opportunities, forecasts property tax liabilities on developing projects, and partners with internal stakeholders to manage property tax exposures across a diverse portfolio of assets.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and file personal and real property tax returns across multiple jurisdictions.
- Monitor filing deadlines and ensure timely submission of renditions, declarations, and supporting documentation.
- Maintain property tax calendars and compliance trackers.
- Analyze property tax assessments for accuracy and reasonableness.
- Coordinate and prepare assessment appeals, including gathering supporting data and liaising with external consultants.
- Track appeal statuses and outcomes to ensure proper financial reporting.
- Calculate and record property tax accruals.
- Reconcile property tax accounts and support month-end and quarter-end close processes.
- Aid in budgeting and forecasting of property tax liabilities on current and future business opportunities.
- Respond to property tax audits and inquiries from taxing authorities.
- Maintain documentation to support filed returns and positions taken.
- Cook with external advisors as needed.
- Maintain accurate fixed asset and property tax records, including asset classification and situs data.
- Identify opportunities to minimize property tax liabilities, including exemptions, abatements, and incentive programs.
- Provide guidance to operations, real estate, and project teams on property tax implications of new investments or projects.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in property tax compliance, state and local tax (SALT), or related area (public accounting or industry).
- Strong understanding of multi-state property tax rules and assessment processes.
- Experience with fixed asset systems and property tax software (e.g., PTMS, OneSource, or similar).
Additional Qualifications
- Proficiency in Microsoft Power BI and Excel (advanced formulas, data analysis tools).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Detail-oriented with ability to manage multiple deadlines.
- Effective communication skills with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience with large, multi-jurisdictional asset portfolios (e.g., energy, infrastructure, real estate), preferred.
- Familiarity with property tax incentives (e.g., abatements, PILOT agreements, energy-related exemptions), preferred.
- Experience working with external consultants and managing appeals strategies, preferred.
