Property Services Operating Maintenance Engineer II
About the Role
This position provides on-demand, onsite service and maintenance to interior climate control systems and their associated mechanisms in city-owned properties, including but not limited to: buildings used for occupied office space, police precincts, fire stations, secure storage, data rooms, certain public works facilities, and sanitation garages.
Work is performed on-site only. The City of Minneapolis does not sponsor applications for work visas.
Responsibilities
- Scheduled service, preventative maintenance, repair, and upgrades to interior climate control systems in city-owned properties.
- Scheduled service, preventative maintenance, repairs, upgrades, and replacement of appliances in 24/7 occupied spaces (e.g., police precincts, fire stations, data and evidence storage, forensic lab space).
- Seasonal requirements on specific properties, such as snow removal and light landscaping, where applicable.
Working Conditions
Work environments include indoor, outdoor, and confined spaces, involving air conditioning units, boilers, and exposure to heights, caustic chemicals, refrigerants, moving mechanical parts, and high voltage.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of 3 years of boiler operations or equivalent experience.
Qualifications
- Valid Driver’s license.
- MN Dept. of Labor and Industry boiler operating license (2C or greater).
- Environmental Protection Agency Universal Refrigerant Handling Certification (608).
- MN Dept. of Labor and Industry registered unlicensed electrician.
- City of Minneapolis-approved asbestos handling/removal training course.
- Minnesota-approved training/certification in confined space work environments.
- Clean driving record.
- Ability to pass random chemical testing and federal, state, and local law enforcement background checks.
- Fire extinguisher maintenance training/certification.
- National Safety Council First Aid, CPR, and Automated External Defibrillator training/certification.
Skills
- Multiple types of mechanical skills, specialized tool use, and troubleshooting ability.
- Ability to work and operate 24/7 in all weather conditions.
- Commitment to continuing education for all required certifications and safety training.
Selection Process
The selection process may include a rating of relevant education and experience. Applications must detail all relevant education and experience, as this information determines which candidates proceed. Only those scoring 70% or higher in each step will be placed on the eligible list. The eligible list expires after four months.
The hiring authority reserves the right to limit the number of candidates interviewed and may select additional candidates based on education, experience, work history, or skills related to operational needs.
Background Check & Testing
- A thorough Minneapolis Police Department criminal background check is required. Applicants must sign an informed consent form; refusal disqualifies consideration.
- Applicants must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test after a conditional offer. Refusal results in withdrawal of the offer.
- After a conditional job offer, candidates must pass a medical examination, including a physical screening.

This position is represented by a collective bargaining agreement between the City of Minneapolis and the Stationary Engineers (CSE).
