Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Carefully and appropriately receive, handle, log, and process all narcotics submissions to the Department.
  • Carefully and appropriately receive, log, and store all other evidence submissions to the Department.
  • Have the authority to issue or release evidence or property, and maintain a secure chain of custody.
  • Thoroughly research all Departmental records any release or destruction of evidence or property.
  • Responsible for the destruction of narcotics, evidence, and other property when so directed by the supervisor.
  • Responsible for keeping appropriate files on all narcotics and firearms taken in as property or evidence.
  • Physically escort narcotics, evidence, or other property to court or other agencies when required.
  • Maintain records as are necessary for the efficient management of the Section.
  • Be available to testify in any Court proceeding when a subpoena is issued, regarding storage, care, and chain of custody for evidence held in the Property and Evidence Section.
  • Aid in the production of evidence needed for identification purposes.
  • Make available to Identification Section any evidence needing additional service.
  • Produce all subpoenaed evidence for court or deposition.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all files, records, and evidence held within the Property and Evidence Section.
  • Aid in any property, evidence, or narcotics audits or inventories required by agency policy.

Skills And Physical Abilities Required

  • Considerable knowledge of Florida Statutes, Bradenton Police Department General Orders and Standard Operating Procedures, and Property and Evidence section protocols relating to the proper collection, handling, storage, distribution, and destruction of property and evidence of all types.
  • Considerable knowledge of report and record maintenance principles and techniques.
  • Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions in regards to minimizing the risk of exposure to hazardous chemicals, narcotics, firearms, and blood pathogens.
  • Ability to understand legal terminology as it applies to various forms, requests, and authorizations received from the State Attorney’s Office, Public Defender’s Office, or private attorneys.
  • Ability to exercise considerable discretion and maintain confidentiality due to the sensitive nature of information processed.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the general public.
  • Ability to plan, organize, supervise, and train subordinates.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to be articulate and professional during court testimony; ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, sitting, standing and walking, occasional squatting, kneeling and climbing.
  • Heavy physical exertion on demand during lifting and storing of property; maximum lifting fifty plus (50+) pounds occasionally, one (1) to five (5) pounds frequently.

Education and Experience Required

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Possession of and ability to maintain a valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Experience in inventory control, operating office equipment, and maintaining files and records is preferred.
  • Prior experience working with a Law Enforcement agency is preferred.

Environmental Conditions

  • Inside work, office environment, with some instances outside the Police Headquarters building for training, court, or evidence handling/escort.
  • Dress in department-issued uniform, except when otherwise instructed.
  • Protective clothing and gear shall be worn when necessary.

Special Requirements

  • Polygraph, medical exam, urinalysis/drug screen, and a background investigation.
