Project Superintendent - Healthcare Construction
About the role
The Christman Company is seeking an experienced Healthcare Superintendent to join our team in the DC Metro / Northern Virginia region. This role is responsible for leading the day-to-day field operations on complex healthcare construction projects, including renovations, additions, and new construction within active healthcare environments.
Responsibilities
- Ensure Christman is represented on-site every day work is being performed while setting expectations, maintaining accountability, and leading field operations.
- Lead construction activities within occupied healthcare facilities while prioritizing patient safety, infection prevention, noise and vibration mitigation, and operational continuity.
- Review conceptual, schematic, and design development documents for constructability, phasing, temporary utilities, shutdown planning, site logistics, and healthcare-specific operational impacts.
- Develop and execute detailed project phasing plans that minimize disruptions to patient care and critical hospital operations.
- Cook up closely with hospital facility personnel, clinical departments, infection prevention teams, security, environmental services, and other stakeholders throughout construction.
- Implement and enforce project-specific safety programs while integrating Infection Control Risk Assessments (ICRA), Interim Life Safety Measures (ILSM), and other healthcare regulatory requirements.
- Conduct site safety orientations for all personnel, emphasizing both traditional construction safety and healthcare-specific protocols, including infection control, containment, and patient-sensitive work practices.
- Monitor and enforce compliance with OSHA standards, hospital policies, Joint Commission expectations, and applicable healthcare codes and regulations.
- Promptly investigate accidents, safety incidents, and infection control violations while implementing corrective actions as necessary.
- Plan and coordinate site logistics, including temporary barriers, containment systems, equipment locations, material deliveries, access routes, and emergency egress.
- Partner with the Project Manager, client representatives, designers, and trade contractors to develop detailed work plans and coordinate upcoming activities through regular progress meetings.
- Coordinate utility shutdowns, tie-ins, commissioning activities, and critical infrastructure work to minimize disruptions to healthcare operations.
- Oversee technical interpretation of construction documents and recommend construction methods that meet quality standards while maintaining hospital functionality.
- Facilitate pre-installation meetings with trade contractors, hospital representatives, and facility personnel for critical work affecting occupied spaces.
- Coordinate inspections, permitting, AHJ requirements, life safety inspections, and regulatory approvals necessary to complete work.
- Prioritize review of critical submittals related to medical equipment coordination, MEP systems, dimensional control, and constructability.
- Maintain rolling punch lists while ensuring high-quality finishes appropriate for healthcare environments.
- Verify and authorize trade contractor time and material work when applicable.
- Acknowledge and approve emergency purchases necessary to maintain project safety, schedule, or hospital operations in coordination with project leadership.
- Prepare accurate daily reports documenting project progress, safety observations, infection control compliance, weather conditions, utility shutdowns, and operational impacts.
- Continuously evaluate project progress against schedule and proactively develop contingency plans to maintain milestones while minimizing impacts to hospital operations.
- Resolve field conflicts collaboratively while maintaining strong relationships with owners, facility staff, design partners, and trade contractors.
- Complete trade contractor performance evaluations and provide recommendations for continuous improvement.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum five (5) years of commercial construction experience in a leadership role as a Foreman or Superintendent.
- Demonstrated experience successfully managing healthcare construction projects, including renovations within occupied hospitals, medical office buildings, ambulatory care facilities, surgical centers, or other healthcare environments.
- Experience coordinating construction activities around active patient care environments and critical building systems.
- Knowledge of Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA), Interim Life Safety Measures (ILSM), and healthcare regulatory requirements.
- Successful completion of coursework or training in Construction Management, Project Management, Safety, or Leadership.
Qualifications
- Ability to lead complex construction activities while maintaining patient safety and uninterrupted healthcare operations.
- Thorough understanding of healthcare construction practices, including infection prevention, containment, temporary barriers, utility shutdowns, and phased construction.
- Familiarity with healthcare accreditation standards, life safety requirements, and regulatory compliance.
- Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, sequencing, and coordination across all major trade disciplines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with healthcare executives, clinicians, facility staff, architects, engineers, and trade contractors.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and sound judgment in fast-paced healthcare environments.
- Working knowledge of job cost accounting and project financial reporting.
- Advanced understanding of construction scheduling, coordination of complex MEP systems, and supervision of multiple trade contractors.
- Ability to prioritize responsibilities and consistently meet project deadlines.
- Proven ability to develop strong partnerships with owners, architects, engineers, facility management teams, and trade contractors.
- Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to proactively resolve field issues while maintaining positive working relationships.
- Passion for collaborative planning, operational excellence, and delivering exceptional client experiences.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, Procore, Building Information Modeling (BIM), Microsoft Project, and other construction technology platforms.

Pay
Expected salary range for this position in Virginia / District of Columbia is $95,000- $125,000 annually. Actual compensation will be determined based on experience, skills, education, certifications, and geographic location.
