About the role
We are Second Order Controls, a division of ARCO/Murray National Construction, seeking a highly-motivated Industrial Controls Project Manager based in Chicago, IL.
Responsibilities
- Lead all aspects of a project from preconstruction through project closeout, including controls design, buyout, installation, and commissioning activities.
- Oversee PLC and HMI/SCADA programming efforts, including point mapping, sequence implementation, testing strategy, graphics coordination, and field integration support.
- Review control narratives, shop drawings, panel layouts, submittals, and as-built documentation to confirm accuracy, constructability, and compliance with project scope.
- Support equipment and controls buyout, including instrumentation selection, controller architecture, vendor evaluations, and procurement planning.
- Direct field installation activities for low-voltage controls systems, including device placement, wiring coordination, control panel installation, communications infrastructure, and point-to-point verification.
- Work closely with clients and design team to deliver ARCO’s fully integrated model on ARCO’s most complex projects.
- Operate as a leading contributor in growing ARCO’s self-perform controls services.
- Troubleshoot issues, identify root causes, and guide resolution processes.
- Manage project types including Mission Critical, Advanced Manufacturing, Power & Gas Infrastructure, Municipal and Private Water Treatment, Waste-to-Value, Commercial, Controlled Environments Agriculture, and more.
Requirements
- Preferred 5+ years of industrial controls experience.
- Strong understanding of industrial control system architecture, including PLCs, HMIs, SCADA platforms, instrumentation, field devices, control panels, and communications networks.
- Experience with Ignition SCADA platform configuration, graphics development, tag structure, alarming, and integration with PLC-based control systems.
- Experience with Siemens and/or Beckhoff PLC programming, logic development, troubleshooting, and field integration.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, adaptable and flexible style in working with different types of individuals.
- Strong understanding of engineering principles (HVAC, thermodynamics, heat transfer, process engineering).
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
- Highly entrepreneurial and self-motivated, with the ability to successfully work on own.
- Comfortable with spending time on construction jobsite - 25-40%.
- Familiar with construction practices and principles.
