About the role

The Project Manager I is responsible for delivering small to mid-scale engineering projects of low to moderate complexity, ensuring projects are submitted on time, on budget, and within scope while meeting contractual requirements and client expectations. This role involves managing client relationships, delegating technical tasks, and contributing to business development. Time allocation: 40% Project Management, 40% People Management, 20% Business Development. Promotion to the next level typically occurs within three years for those consistently achieving annual sales and revenue goals.

Responsibilities

  • Project Management
    • Execute and deliver small to mid-scale engineering projects of moderate and large complexity.
    • Review project contracts and scope of work; create the Burns Unique Client Experience (BUCE) plan to ensure on-time, on-budget delivery in compliance with Burns and client standards, policies, and engineering codes (project write-downs not to exceed 3% of net revenue).
    • Create and communicate resource plans to delegate project tasks to the team.
    • Delegate project plans to Project/Senior Project Engineers and technical leaders to develop innovative design solutions and enhance efficiency, accuracy, and quality of deliverables.
    • Complete all Burns BUCE and QAQC procedures for applicable projects.
    • Communicate out-of-scope work to clients to secure change order approvals proactively.
    • Sign and seal engineering drawings.
    • Coordinate and review the work of multidisciplinary teams with technical leads.
    • Maintain profitable multiplier (annual goal) and keep Accounts Receivable under 60 days.
  • Client Relationship Management
    • Build and maintain strong client relationships through proactive communication and exceeding expectations.
    • Address client feedback from satisfaction surveys.
    • Secure approval for change orders to avoid write-downs and out-of-scope work.
  • People Management
    • Recruit, develop, and retain top talent to grow the team and organization.
    • Collaborate with Technical Leads to delegate work and create opportunities for professional growth and skill development.
    • Mentor employees to support succession planning.
    • Define measurable goals, assess performance, and provide feedback and recognition.
    • Complete annual performance reviews.
    • Implement strategies to create and support high-performing teams.
  • Business Development
    • Execute annual business plan activities.
    • Build and maintain relationships with existing clients.
    • Complete assessments to win project work.
    • Collaborate with technical leads and the Proposal Team to prepare scopes, budgets, fee schedules, and resource plans for proposals.
  • Compliance
    • Perform tasks in compliance with Burns and client standards, policies, procedures, and engineering codes.
    • Complete tasks efficiently, accurately, and within allotted project hours.
    • Adhere to Human Resources policies and partner with HR to ensure compliance with employment regulations.
    • Follow all operational and quality policies and procedures.
    • Complete special duties as assigned.

The Project Manager I will have formal supervisory responsibilities for a minimum of 2 to 5 employees.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university or college.
  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive engineering experience.
  • 0 to 2 years of experience managing projects, people, client relationships, and business development.

Qualifications

Registered Professional Engineer License in one of the major technical disciplines practiced by the firm is strongly preferred.
