About the Role

Vertex is seeking a Project Engineer/Scientist or Assistant Project Manager to execute environmental assessment and remediation projects for top-tier clients in California. The role involves supporting the success of the assigned practice area as the highest priority, modeling the company’s core values, and inspiring team collaboration and goal achievement.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct and manage environmental site assessments including subsurface investigations of soil, groundwater, soil gas, and indoor air.
  • Plan and execute environmental remediation projects, including soil excavation and treatment, groundwater remediation, and vapor intrusion pathway mitigation.
  • Provide oversight to field staff and subcontractors conducting site investigation and remediation projects.
  • Ensure that project deliverables, milestones, and budgets are met.
  • Work closely with senior managers to coordinate work activities to meet milestones, budgetary limits, deadlines, or other performance indicators.
  • Prepare, review, and submit final reports in accordance with regulations, applicable guidance and policies, and internal quality control standards.
  • Coordinate with team members, provide guidance, and monitor progress on assigned tasks or projects to ensure high-quality work product.
  • Meet or exceed defined individual average utilization goals as set forth by company leadership.
  • Support and coordinate with other team members in a “lead by example” manner, fostering a positive and empowered culture.
  • Travel as necessary to support client, employee, and leadership needs.
  • Support quality control of service delivery to maintain an excellent reputation for quality.
  • Provide guidance to project team members to assist with rapid identification and escalation of any client, team member, or operational challenges.
  • Be aware of and work in a manner that supports the organization’s vision and defined business objectives.
  • Conduct self and collaborate with others to achieve defined profit objectives of assigned projects.
  • Cooperate in building strong cross-functional teams to achieve success in shared goals.
  • Complete daily tasks consistently and efficiently.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering and 4 years of related experience, or a Master's degree and 3 years of related experience, or 8 years of related experience and no degree.
  • Experience with assessment, remediation, and compliance as well as other relevant regulatory programs for the region.
  • Successful track record in managing multi-faceted environmental projects with multiple services and accelerated schedules.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); working knowledge of Office 365 applications preferred.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proven track record of independent work product production, project management, and coordination with team members.
  • Demonstrated management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Licensed Geologist, Professional Engineer, or Engineer in Training (EIT) in California; or successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and on track to take the PE exam.
  • Master’s Degree in Geology, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or related environmental field.
  • Experience conducting Property Condition Assessments (PCAs).
  • AHERA (Asbestos) certifications.

  • Ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal) with co-workers, supervisors, clients, subcontractors, and vendors.
  • Ability to provide oversight and direction to assigned staff.

  • Demonstrated self-awareness and flexibility in working with a variety of personalities and work styles.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and perform consistently under high-stress conditions.
  • Knowledge of computer operations and standard software packages (word processing, spreadsheets, Adobe).

Pay

The salary ranges for this role are as follows:

  • $86,000 - $234,000 USD annually (Geographical Tier AA - Sample Locations: NY Metro, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle).
  • $79,000 - $216,000 USD annually (Geographical Tier A - Sample Locations: Irvine CA, Middlesex NJ, Tacoma WA, Boston, Alexandria).

Starting compensation is determined by experience, geographical location, scope of the role at the time of hire, and company affordability.

Schedule

This role operates on a hybrid/remote schedule based in either the Irvine office or remotely.
