Project Leader

About the role

The Project Leader provides support and leadership to volunteers at the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank, reporting to the Senior Volunteer Project Manager. This role is part of a friendly, collaborative, and hardworking Supply Chain team dedicated to ending hunger in San Francisco and Marin counties.

About us

The San Francisco-Marin Food Bank’s mission is to end hunger in San Francisco and Marin counties. We envision a community free of the root causes of hunger, where everyone has access to nutritious food of their choosing and is uplifted by a network of support. Together with over 300 community partners, we address hunger through neighborhood food pantries, CalFresh enrollment, home-delivered groceries, and policy and advocacy efforts. This fiscal year, we are serving 40,000+ households per week, with nearly 70% of distributions being fresh fruits and vegetables. Learn more.

Responsibilities

Volunteer Supervision and Project Management

• Oversee and assist volunteers in projects such as building kits of shelf-stable food, packing grocery bags, working in a clean room, or reboxing produce.
• Manage program supplies, set-up, check-in, sorting, and packing of food boxes.
• Train, supervise, and assign roles to volunteers, ensuring adherence to guidelines and protocols.
• Orient volunteers, including public speaking.
• Set up and coordinate onsite projects.
• Maintain a tidy and clean workspace.
• Create a welcoming and respectful atmosphere for volunteers.
• Collect and communicate necessary information to Food Bank staff, Food Resources, and the Community Engagement team.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Warehouse Work

• Operate material handling equipment (forklifts, pallet jacks, etc.) safely to perform warehouse duties such as storage, agency order pulling, and produce sorting.
• Sort and process produce and food drive products.
• Perform other duties and tasks as required.

Requirements

• Demonstrated ability to lead individuals and teams in a nonprofit setting.
• Excellent organizational and communication skills, with the ability to multitask.
• Adherence to agency policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency procedures.
• Solid understanding of food safety and public health guidelines to prevent the spread of foodborne illnesses and other pathogens.
• Conflict resolution and problem-solving skills, with the ability to listen, communicate, and enforce critical rules fairly.
• Compliance with all confidentiality policies and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous warehouse experience.
• Forklift certification.
• Safe food handling certification.

Schedule

This position follows a Tuesday–Saturday schedule, with the potential for occasional early evening shifts (e.g., 12–8 PM).

Pay

The starting salary for this full-time position ranges from $29.30–$30.11 per hour, depending on experience.
