About the role

The Night Captain is responsible for managing and decisively leading all aspects of surface and underground night operations as directed by the Project Superintendent. This includes environmental, health and safety initiatives, supervisor and employee development, project management, cost management, and fostering a constructive, positive working relationship with peers.

The Night Captain will oversee an experienced team of supervisors and work crews, building and maintaining high-performing teams through comprehensive mentorship and leadership while ensuring all operations adhere to the highest safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all mining projects during night operations.
  • Oversee day-to-day (nightly) operations by developing and monitoring project performance against plans, schedules, and goals to ensure timely and budget-compliant completion.
  • Identify, assess, prioritize, and resolve production and employee-related problems.
  • Interface with MSHA and other state and federal inspectors.
  • Conduct mine inspections to ensure safety standards are met, identify hazards, and recommend improvements to working conditions.
  • Plan and coordinate work schedules.
  • Ensure compliance with policies and procedures for mine operations, including equipment maintenance, training programs, and safety standards.
  • Allocate resources to achieve performance plans, schedules, and goals, taking corrective action when necessary.
  • Report non-compliance and ensure clear communication throughout the mine to prevent repeat incidents.
  • Ensure employees understand and follow policies and procedures.
  • Prepare and submit reports on the progress and status of mine operations.
  • Manage the capital budget, monitor expenses, and correct deficiencies.
  • Ensure all administrative functions are complied with.
  • Ensure compliance with legislative, regulatory, company, and customer policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with peers and support functions to identify risks and bottlenecks, taking remedial action to improve operations.
  • Ensure the supervisory team possesses the necessary skills and knowledge to carry out work competently and safely.
  • Exhibit sound leadership practices, provide guidance, and support direct reports through daily meetings, reviews, and documented planning.
  • Ensure strict adherence to Redpath’s Philosophy, Guidelines for Success, Code of Conduct, and Cardinal Rules.
  • Establish full compliance with the Redpath 17-element safety program and monthly Safety Accountability Program (SAP).
  • Manage emergency situations and escalate as required.
  • Responsible for hiring, training, development, discipline, and termination of employees.
  • Operate a company vehicle if required, possessing a current state driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Maintain safe work areas, free of hazards, and perform Field Level Risk Assessments.
  • Comprehend written and verbal instructions to perform duties safely and efficiently.
  • Comply with daily, weekly, and monthly safety directives, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding Redpath and client information.
  • Comply with and ensure adherence to Redpath’s Policies and Procedures as outlined in manuals, handbooks, directives, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Work in excess of 40 hours a week, including overtime, nights, weekends, holidays, and shift rotations.
  • Comply with Redpath Core Competencies as an essential duty.
  • Assist other job functions as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (mechanical, electrical, construction) or other mining-related specialty (preferred).
  • Minimum of 7 years of underground mining experience, with at least 5 years in a supervisory role.

  • Proficiency in computer programs, including standard MS Office applications.

Other Requirements

  • Ability to pass a background clearance check, drug screening, and physical.
