About the role
A leading heavy civil contractor is seeking an experienced Field Engineer to support the delivery of a major transportation infrastructure project in Midtown Manhattan. The Field Engineer will support the planning, coordination, and execution of civil construction activities in the field.
Responsibilities
- Field Engineering and Planning
- Prepare and submit Construction Work Plans and Safe Work Plans.
- Prepare engineering drawings and shop drawings.
- Review and coordinate work plans and shop drawings with subcontractors.
- Assist with field layout and planning of civil construction activities.
- Review drawings, specifications, and RFIs.
- Identify potential discrepancies and constructability issues.
- Support work sequencing and achievement of project milestones.
- Construction Coordination
- Assist the Superintendent with daily field operations and work planning.
- Coordinate subcontractors and ensure work conforms to drawings and specifications.
- Interface with project engineers, superintendents, inspectors, and design professionals.
- Coordinate with utility companies, transit agencies, and local authorities when required.
- Support project turnover, punch-list completion, and closeout activities.
- Documentation and Reporting
- Track installed quantities and complete quantity takeoffs.
- Assist with production and progress reporting.
- Maintain daily reports, inspection logs, and as-built documentation.
- Support preparation and management of submittals, RFIs, and field-change records.
- Maintain progress photographs and accurate field records.
- Quality and Safety
- Monitor field activities for compliance with project specifications and quality standards.
- Participate in inspections with owners, engineers, and third-party inspectors.
- Promote and enforce project safety requirements and company policies.
- Support inspection and testing requirements for civil construction work.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
- At least five years of civil construction experience, ideally in a field-based engineering capacity.
- Experience with heavy civil or transportation infrastructure projects.
- Knowledge of civil construction activities including earthwork, utilities, concrete, and paving.
- Ability to read and interpret civil drawings, specifications, and project schedules.
- Experience preparing or coordinating work plans, shop drawings, RFIs, and submittals.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with bus terminals, transit facilities, rail, airport, or comparable transportation infrastructure projects.
- Experience on public-agency projects involving transit or transportation authorities.
- Experience with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or field-layout software.
- Experience with surveying equipment and field-layout practices.
- Knowledge of civil inspection and material-testing requirements.
