Project Exploration Geologist

About the Location

Located approximately 26 miles from the City of Fairbanks, Fort Knox is a center of excellence for Kinross as one of the few cold weather heap leach facilities in the world. Fort Knox celebrated its 25-year anniversary in 2021 and has produced over 10 million ounces since it began operation. In 2020, Kinross acquired Manh Choh, which commenced production in 2024 and processes ore at Fort Knox. Fort Knox prioritizes being a strong contributor to the State and local communities, and since 2001, has helped support more than 300 community partners and contributed over US$25 million to the Alaska Mental Health Trust.

This position is based at the Fort Knox Mine, with employees commuting daily. The role frequently requires travel to other offices, facilities, or field sites, particularly from May through October, involving scenarios from town-based to tent-based fieldwork and travel by highway, UTV, helicopter, and foot.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical and logistical supervision of project activities in the field and office.
• Advise on or carry out technical functions such as mapping, drill hole logging, and project planning.
• Integrate and interpret geologic mapping, geophysical, geochemical, trenching, and drilling data.
• Assist in constructing 3D geologic models and compiling and calculating mineral resources.
• Oversee and enforce rigorous QA/QC standards for all aspects of technical projects.
• Assist in authoring routine and statutory technical reports.
• Assist in assessing and maintaining Kinross’ Mineral Estate in Alaska.
• Prepare budget requests, scope contracts, and manage contractors for exploration, resource definition, and project development.
• Track budgets and estimate ongoing exploration project costs.
• Lead project teams and develop communication and interpersonal skills.
• Mentor junior and contracting staff during daily functions.
• Comply with all company policies and procedures, including safety, environmental, confidentiality, and code of conduct.
• Exercise discretion and judgment in job performance while ensuring safety for self and others.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science degree in Geology or equivalent (required). A Master of Science degree with an economic geology emphasis is preferred.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience as a mine or exploration geologist.
• Knowledge of exploration techniques for mineral deposit discovery and evaluation.
• Advanced knowledge of mineral deposits and integration of exploration methods in discovery and evaluation.
• Ability to identify and communicate indications of favorable geologic settings (geology, geochemistry, alteration, and geophysics).
• Experience with ArcGIS or equivalent desktop mapping software and acQuire database software (preferred).
• Familiarity with Leapfrog Geo (preferred).
• Experience with Excel and Access databases (desired).
• Strong verbal, written, analytical, and persuasive skills.
• Demonstrated administrative, organizational, and technical writing skills.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by a state agency, or ability to pass a driver competency course and exam.

Reporting Relationships

• Provides training and guidance to entry-level professionals.
• Reports to the Exploration Manager.
