Project Engineer I/II Engineering Services - Kansas City, KS

This is a full-time position based in Kansas City, KS, with an anticipated start date of 10/01/2026. Travel is required approximately 60-90%, and the role is subject to on-call responsibilities for emergency situations, as well as rotating shifts that may include days, nights, weekends, and holidays.

About the role

The BNSF Railway Engineering Department is responsible for designing, constructing, and maintaining the infrastructure of our extensive rail network. This role involves applying advanced engineering principles to address complex challenges, ensuring the safety and efficiency of our operations. You will play a key role in shaping the future of freight transportation and contribute to one of the top railroads in North America.

Responsibilities

• Manage the implementation of construction projects including planning, permitting, project administration, construction management, inspection, and project performance.
• Implement and manage construction safety processes.
• Effectively evaluate and control change orders associated with projects.
• Support cash flow forecast processes.
• Support the preparation of detailed estimates for the Capital Expenditure Program.
• Projects will generally be fast-paced and dynamic, with responsibilities varying widely based on BNSF's needs.

Depending on a Construction or Public Projects role, additional responsibilities may include:

• Manage the development of engineering plans, estimates, and schedules for main line and other track projects such as line changes, double track, yard modifications, and other railway facilities projects, with a primary focus on stabilization issues.
• Furnish engineering support for the design and maintenance of railroad structures including bridges, tunnels, and culverts.
• Assist in working with public agencies on interdependent projects.
• Coordinate internal Signal, Track, Telecommunications, and Structures design and construction activities to progress the overall project.

Daily work is conducted in an indoor/outdoor safety-sensitive environment where conditions can include diverse and extreme weather (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet), walking and working on uneven surfaces, exposure to loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.

Requirements

• Experience working with contractors on construction projects relating to track, facilities, and new construction.
• Planning and engineering design capability.
• Thorough understanding of track and general civil engineering, including geotechnical engineering, as well as knowledge of track maintenance and train operations.
• Exemplary communication skills for frequent interfacing with BNSF Railway and various public agencies.
• Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
• Ability to work effectively as a team member, coordinating efforts of multiple project stakeholders.
• Working understanding of permitting processes is desirable.
• Engineering or Construction Management degree highly desired.
• Knowledge of, or ability to quickly learn, BNSF's engineering standards and policies.

Pay

Salary range: $96,300 - $108,600 per year.
