Project Engineer (Cranes & Industrial Equipment)
Brief Description
As a Project Engineer, you will design and detail custom overhead lifting equipment, including components such as hoists, end trucks, bridge girders, and spreader bars.
Responsibilities
- Sizing motors, shafts, beams, and columns while coordinating work with other engineering disciplines.
- Provide engineering support to sales, shop, and field personnel as needed.
- Prepare detailed fabrication, installation, and machining drawings using SolidWorks 3D design software.
Requirements
- Create crane fabrication and installation drawings in accordance with CMAA specifications up to Class E crane service using SolidWorks.
- Hoists will include custom built-up, pre-engineered & package hoist designs.
- Direct mechanical sizing and selection of critical drive components, including motors, gearboxes, and specialized couplings (gear/barrel), while conducting structural analysis for bridge girders and runway systems in strict adherence to ANSI, ASME, and CMAA standards.
- Sizing and selecting gearboxes/motors for hoisting and driving equipment in accordance with industry standards and guidelines (CMAA, ANSI, ASME).
- Manage the design and certification of lifting devices, overseeing the standardization of parts for package hoist product lines to optimize manufacturing workflow and reduce lead times.
- Sizing bridge girders, runway beams and columns in accordance with industry standards and guidelines (CMAA, ANSI, ASME).
- Coordinate technical submittals and complex Owner’s Manuals ensuring all documentation satisfies compliance requirements.
- Sizing of purchased part items including bearings, bushings, gear and barrel couplings, etc.
- Design and detail below-the-hook lifting devices in accordance with industry standards.
- Standardization of parts for implementation of package hoist product line to increase productivity and work flow.
- Collaborate with sales, purchasing, and the product lines to resolve production bottlenecks and use Excel to create tools that make engineering faster and more efficient.
- Use MS Excel and/or MathCAD to develop standard design programs and calculations to make the engineering group more efficient.
Education
A high school diploma or GED is required; an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university with a focus in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Structural Engineering, or related discipline is required; in the absence of a degree, directly related job experience serving in an engineering role, where a number of years and proven knowledge may offset the degree requirement.
Experience & Skills
- Solidworks design and detailing experience required.
- Knowledge of strength of materials properties.
- Previous experience on machined parts, design tables, parametric design, weldments is a plus.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Comfortable in a team-based work environment.
- Strong analytical, conceptual, and planning skills.
- Excellent math skills and overall PC literacy (Microsoft Office).
- Must be detail oriented, self-motivated, and disciplined with the ability to multi-task.
