Project Engineer/CAD Designer

About the role

The Project Engineer / CAD Designer will assist in planning, executing, and delivering engineering projects, combining technical design and project coordination. This role involves developing detailed CAD drawings and models, collaborating with internal teams, suppliers, and contractors, and optimizing fabrication processes to ensure project success.

Responsibilities

• Assist in creating and maintaining detailed project plans, schedules, and budgets for complex fabrication projects, providing technical support throughout the project lifecycle.
• Coordinate with project teams and stakeholders to ensure project requirements and objectives are clearly defined and met.
• Communicate project progress, issues, and updates to stakeholders and management.
• Prepare and maintain project documentation, including reports, presentations, and technical documents.
• Work closely with cross-functional teams, including design, procurement, and construction, to ensure seamless project execution.
• Support and collaborate with senior engineers and project managers in executing project tasks.
• Review and interpret construction drawings, P&IDs, specifications, welding requirements, and quality standards to ensure accuracy and compliance with customer expectations.
• Prepare detailed piping and fabrication work packages that meet industry standards, including AISC, AWS, ASTM, ASME, MIL, NAVSEA, and internal Rhoads standards.
• Produce precise shop drawings and fabrication details using AutoCAD and Inventor and prepare electronic files for fabrication processes.
• Provide on-site engineering support, including field measurements, design verification, and development of practical design solutions, as well as design and documentation of field modifications based on Issued for Construction (IFC) drawings and field conditions.
• Ensure project deliverables meet quality standards and comply with industry regulations.
• Participate in inspections and audits to verify compliance with project specifications.
• Monitor project progress and assist in implementing corrective actions as needed.
• Assist in managing project resources, including personnel, equipment, and materials.
• Coordinate with vendors and suppliers to ensure timely delivery of materials and equipment.
• Identify opportunities for process improvements and contribute to implementing best practices to enhance project performance.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

• B.S. in Engineering, Construction Technology, or related discipline, or equivalent combinations of technical training and/or related experience.
• US Citizenship required.
• 3+ years of experience in project engineering and/or CAD design related roles. Experience level may vary depending on business needs.
• Experience with engineering software (e.g., AutoCAD, Inventor, SolidWorks).
• Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
• Experience with engineering principles, design standards, and industry regulations.
• Ability to work well in a team environment.
• Analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to work with accuracy, efficiency, and attention to detail.
• Strong communication skills to convey requirements in an industrial environment and provide effective direction.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously.
• Ability to work additional hours as necessary to meet business objectives.
• Familiarity with Primavera P6, MS Project, and MS Dynamics is a plus.
• Mature customer service and client communication skills.

Work Environment

• Exposure to construction or industrial areas requiring personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, hard hats, and hearing protection.
• Ability to work in various physical positions, including sitting, standing, walking, and driving.
• May require walking and standing on irregular, uneven surfaces in an industrial setting and at increased heights, including climbing and descending ladders and ship stairways.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs, stand/walk for long periods, and climb ladders.
