Project Engineer
Job Overview
A mechanical engineer works with other MEPF engineers to design building mechanical systems.
Responsibilities And Duties
- System Design: Performs system design calculations including: Electric service load calculations, Voltage drop calculations, Short circuit calculations, Lighting calculations, COMcheck energy calculations.
- System Design: Utilizes Revit 3D drafting software to layout receptacles, panelboards, equipment, lighting control devices, and fire alarm devices. Produces drawing sets, including but not limited to, drawing notes, details, and single line riser diagrams. Selects equipment, such as distribution boards and panelboards, light fixtures, lighting control systems, and fire alarm systems. Gains understanding of different electrical system types (medium voltage applications, service entrance, grounding and lightning protection systems, etc.). Learns outline and book specifications.
- Life Safety: Researches code on required life safety and standby loads, and fire alarm system requirements. Researches fire alarm system types and components required for each occupancy group. Performs emergency power generator load calculations. Sizes and selects automatic and manual transfer switches and associated components. Creates emergency power single line diagram and tie-ins.
- Sustainability: Gains familiarity with various certifications (LEED, etc.). Completes building certification (e.g. LEED) documentation. Participates in sustainability meetings. Considers energy impact when implementing designs.
- Design Coordination: Collaborates with fellow Altieri engineers of all MEPF trades to progress project design. Collaborates with clients, other consultants, and contractors. Identifies and resolves conflicts. Considers constructability and maintenance requirements of designs.
- Client Interface: Actively participates in client meetings. Responsive to client requests to provide designs within the contract agreement.
- Code/References: Uses international and local building codes to inform design and calculations. Applies energy codes to design and calculations. References NEC and NFPA to inform design and calculations.
