About the role

You’ll play a key role in your assigned project(s). Your work will help guide project execution, and strengthen the legal frameworks that support complex, high-impact infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic, hands-on legal counsel across all project phases, ensuring compliance with the relevant contracts and effective risk mitigation.
  • Collaborate with commercial teams, project managers, and executive leadership to align legal strategies with business objectives.
  • Act as the primary legal resource on assigned projects, interpreting contracts and responding to legal inquiries.
  • Draft, review and negotiate contracts and related agreements, including prime contract amendments and change orders, subcontracts, and purchase orders, among other agreements attendant to project execution.
  • Engage with external stakeholders—clients, delivery partners, and government agencies—to support project success.
  • Identify risks, propose mitigation strategies, and advance resolution of risks working, as the particular risk may require, with outside counsel and consultants.
  • Support dispute resolution and claims management with a solutions-driven approach, including management of outside counsel and consultants.

Requirements

  • Licensed to practice law in the United States, and either already barred in the state of Hawaii or willing to take the Hawaii bar within six months of hire.
  • At least five years experience in construction law, with a preference for time split between time working for a firm or the Government and as in-house counsel at a construction or engineering company.
  • Non-construction law experience coupled with time working in a non-legal role (e.g., engineer or project controls) in a construction or engineering company will also be considered.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage the legal aspects of construction projects from claims and litigation to subcontracting and compliance.
  • Strong understanding of the Federal Acquisition Regulations, with prior experience on DOD/DOW construction projects preferred.
  • Comfortable navigating complex stakeholder groups and providing decisive legal guidance.
  • Strong communication (written and verbal) and people skills, including ability to work across cultures and maintain business/client relationships during all stages of project execution.
  • Knowledge of insurance and risk management programs for construction mega projects including Builders’ Risk and Professional Liability.
  • Able to work independently and under tight deadlines.
