About the role

The Project Controls Specialist works closely with the Industrial Project Team to develop and maintain plans for successful project execution by utilizing project controls. This role creates and utilizes tools to track and evaluate project success, develops and maintains project schedules, monitors field labor productivity, and assists in cost forecasting.

Responsibilities

  • Review and understand project controls requirements per project and provide input to project team members on necessary reporting.
  • Work with team members to develop applicable project control reports needed to track project progress.
  • Develop project schedules to align with budgets and cost requirements.
  • Work with project managers, Foremen, and Estimators to develop a WBS (work breakdown structure) for projects.
  • Work with project Foremen and subcontractors to develop a CPM (critical path methodology) project schedule reflecting actual work activities.
  • Create resource teams in Primavera software and assign resources to project schedules.
  • Create WBS that aligns with project needs and generate reports for owner-required feedback per area and trade.
  • Develop rules of credit on a per-project basis and track project progress using these rules.
  • Load project schedules with labor units, non-labor units, and costs as required.
  • Create project baselines on schedules and cost, adjusting for change orders or sequence changes.
  • Ensure alignment among project managers, owners, and team members on the specific baseline used for progress.
  • Document project schedule updates, cost updates, sequence changes, or reasons for changes and delays.
  • Analyze LPI, SPI, and KPI reports and provide feedback to the Project Manager on project health.
  • Review project controls information for accuracy and adjust as necessary to ensure valid project feedback.
  • Participate in project meetings and lead project-specific schedule meetings with team members and subcontractors.
  • Review contractor schedules and provide feedback for necessary changes.
  • Gather information needed to format project-specific reports.
  • Update schedules based on project progress.
  • Create and assign project codes on a project-specific basis.
  • Develop cost reports based on project requirements, inputting invoicing, contract values, and forecasting information.
  • Work with the project control team leader on developing project control plans.
  • Provide project management with input on analyzing project impacts for change orders, delays, or possible impacts.
  • Maintain education to stay current with technological methods, software, and tools necessary for the role.
  • Analyze project-specific information to create and track risk logs for review and mitigation.
  • Understand estimating procedures and break down estimates into durations, hours, and activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience (typically six years of progressive work experience).
  • Extensive practical experience with MS Office applications (Excel, Word, Access, Project) and Primavera Project P6.
  • Strong working knowledge of scheduling techniques and industry scheduling standards.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Work Environment

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 10 pounds occasionally.
  • Occasional visits to job sites requiring periods of standing, walking, and/or climbing stairs.
  • Moderate exposure to unusual elements and moderate physical activity.
  • Periodic travel and ability to work extended hours when necessary.

  • Laptop computer.
  • PPE (hard hat, safety glasses, safety boots, Hi-Vis vest).
  • Clothing (jeans, appropriate office shirt).
