About the role
The Project Controls Specialist supports the successful execution of large-scale utility projects by implementing and maintaining systems to monitor cost, schedule, and performance metrics. This role ensures alignment with project goals and regulatory requirements and serves as a key liaison between project management, subcontractors, and vendors.
Responsibilities
- Monitor project progress and performance against baseline schedules and budgets.
- Prepare and present regular reports on cost, schedule, and risk status to stakeholders.
- Support forecasting and earned value analysis (EVA) to assess project health.
- Collaborate with Project Management, Procurement, and Construction teams for accurate data integration.
- Identify and analyze schedule and cost variances, recommending corrective actions.
- Reconcile project deliverables including schedules, contract costs, invoicing, and production data.
- Absorb and document change management processes, including impact analysis and documentation.
- Contribute to risk management by identifying potential issues and suggesting mitigation strategies.
- Ensure compliance with internal controls, contractual obligations, and regulatory standards.
- Support project close-out activities, including final cost reporting and lessons learned documentation.
Requirements
- Proficiency in MS Excel.
- Willingness to learn and develop proficiency in project management systems (EcoSys, HCSS, P6, MS Project, etc.).
- Background in construction projects.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of industry standards such as PMI/AACEi.
- PREFERRED: Degree in Construction Management, Finance, or related field.
- PREFERRED: 1-2 years of experience in project controls, preferably in electric transmission or large infrastructure projects.
- PREFERRED: Experience with utility-scale transmission, distribution, substation, and BESS projects.
- PREFERRED: Familiarity with regulatory environments (e.g., FERC, NERC).
Qualifications
- Primarily office-based with occasional travel to project sites for pre-bid meetings and site assessments.
- Ability to sit for extended periods while working on a computer.
- Occasional lifting and carrying of up to 20 pounds (e.g., project documents, laptop).
- Must be able to navigate construction sites safely when visiting field locations.
