About the role

Stantec is hiring an On Call Project Biologist to support our Environmental Services Practice. The role supports a high-volume environmental services program for a large utility client, with potential to support additional clients based on need/availability.

Responsibilities

  • Aid with field work such as breeding bird surveys, vegetation community assessments, wetland delineation and classification, special-status species surveys, and construction monitoring, including the preparation of parts of or all associated reporting.
  • Provide desktop support (e.g., database searches and literature review), to the project team during the development, management, and coordination of the natural environment component of projects and programs for renewable energy, oil and gas, and other development projects.
  • Aid with the preparation of technical reports (e.g., biological resources, technical reports, jurisdictional delineation reports, monitoring reports, etc.).
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of existing and emerging regulatory requirements, wildlife and vegetation assessment methodologies, and best practices.
  • Coordinate with the team, task leads, program managers, and clients to support multiple tasks and subprograms.
  • Travel is required within southern California.
  • Develop a working understanding of Stantec’s other consulting practice areas and actively support cross-selling other services to existing clients.
  • Regular day travel (field work) will be required within Southern California.

Requirements

  • 1-5 years of biological monitoring, surveying, reporting, or natural resource permitting experience in Southern California.
  • Ability to travel in support of field surveys and/or biological monitoring.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with field implementation, data gathering, and collection using GPS and GIS tools.
  • Familiarity with flora and fauna of Southern California.
  • Skills in communications and technical information exchange with clients, engineers and scientists, government regulators and agencies, and academia.
  • Strong attention to detail, and excellent coordination and communication skills.
  • Adept at handling complex and challenging interactions.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic, and team-oriented setting.
  • Demonstrate good judgement as to when to elevate potential issues to team leads/managers.
  • Proficient in computer software including Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, etc.), and Google Earth.
  • Ability to learn new software systems (training will be provided).
  • Willingness to work outside of typical business hours when needed.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in biology, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Minimum 1-5 years of related experience in Southern California, or an equivalent combination of education (e.g., advanced degree) and experience.

Skills

  • Knowledge of or experience working with a diverse set of project types including energy, transportation, environmental infrastructure, oil and gas, and water is an asset.
  • Wetland delineation certificate or equivalent experience with aquatic resources delineation is a plus.
  • Proficiency in technical writing is a plus.
