About the role

Austin Commercial is seeking a Project Area Manager for our Southeast Division based out of Orlando, Florida. As an Area Project Manager, you'll provide leadership across multiple project teams, drive operational excellence, build strong client relationships, and help shape the future growth of the business. This role offers the opportunity to make an impact beyond the jobsite, contributing to business development, strategic planning, mentoring future leaders, and advancing Austin Commercial's employee-owned culture.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee large, complex commercial construction projects from preconstruction through closeout.
  • Review jobsite progress on assigned projects at regular intervals by attending OAC meetings and meeting with the project manager, superintendent, and others. Key discussion topics include:
    • Safety: Establish requirements and expectations; review the safety manual and procedures; set requirements for safety inspections and use of Predictive Solutions; review accident reports.
    • Startup Activities: Review startup details with superintendents and project managers, assisting with power/utility installations, office trailer placement, etc.
    • Hoisting Equipment: Select and place hoisting equipment, including tower cranes, crawler cranes, personnel and equipment hoists, and other vertical transportation equipment.
    • Planning and Scheduling: Review detailed planning and scheduling for each phase of work or check actual progress against master construction schedules.
    • Quality: Inspect projects for overall quality; discuss problem areas with the superintendent and offer technical guidance.
    • Subcontractor Performance: Review performance of major subcontractors for quality and adherence to schedule; assist superintendents with enforcement.
    • Project Buyouts: Review buyout activities, especially long lead-time items; expedite material deliveries.
    • Prime Contract Change Orders: Review and execute change orders; assess impact on construction schedule; ensure timely owner approval.
    • Costs: Review costs for alignment with the original budget; investigate cost overruns early and resolve issues.
  • Establish and maintain industry relationships with competing contractors, owner groups, architectural firms, subcontractors, and suppliers to negotiate and resolve operational problems and foster new work prospects.
  • Take an active role in business development; lead discussions and/or serve on the Austin presentation team.
  • Review final cost estimates before formal proposal submission; suggest specific contract language as needed.
  • Work with the corporate Risk Management department to ensure compliance with insurance requirements and subcontractor risk management.
  • Offer suggestions and recommendations for short-term and long-term company goals; participate in strategic planning.
  • Assume a leadership role in the career planning and development of project personnel, including project assignments, merit increases, promotions, and staffing decisions.
  • Review job status reports from the Performance Reporting System; investigate major deviations from the plan during jobsite visits.

Requirements

  • B.S. in construction management/science, engineering, or relevant discipline strongly preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 15+ years of combined project management and field operations experience.
  • Successful completion of OSHA 30-Hour Construction Industry Outreach Training (may obtain within first year of employment).
  • Ability to build and lead high-performing teams across multiple projects concurrently.
  • Recognized as an industry-leading subject matter expert.
  • Must be legally authorized to work for ANY employer in the United States; Austin Commercial is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this position.
