pHdesign is a New York City–based architecture practice focused on renovation, adaptive reuse, and high-performance residential projects. Our work is design-driven and environmentally responsible, with the Passive House Institute (PHI) standard used as a design and evaluation tool. We are a small, collaborative office that values thoughtful design, clear communication, and professional responsibility.

About the role

We seek a talented, experienced Architect / Project Manager to become an integral part of our studio. This position reports directly to the partners and requires the ability to work semi-independently while coordinating closely with them as they maintain active client relationships. The successful candidate will represent the office professionally and help guide and support junior staff.

Responsibilities

  • Lead ground-up and renovation projects, with a focus on residential work
  • Manage schedules and meet client budget goals
  • Direct teams, delegate tasks, and mentor junior staff
  • Work collaboratively in a small studio environment and contribute positively to office culture
  • Engage in every phase of project development (SD, DD, CD, CA)
  • Apply knowledge of New York State, New York City, and New Jersey building codes

Requirements

  • 6+ years of professional experience in a structured architectural office
  • Residential project experience required
  • Strong design sensibility with excellent technical, organizational, and communication skills
  • Self-directed work style with sound judgment and strong people skills
  • Legally eligible to work in the U.S.; visa sponsorship is not available

Skills

  • Mac-based office environment
  • Familiarity with BIM software preferred; experience with ArchiCAD is a strong plus
  • Experience with SketchUp, PHPP, and designPH is a plus
  • Passive House experience is a plus; CPHD/PHPP training will be provided if needed
  • Genuine interest in high-performance design and building science is essential

Pay

$85,000–100,000 annual salary
