Project Archaeologist (Construction Monitor)

Responsibilities

  • Lead SOI-qualified construction monitor for the preservation of sensitive resources.
  • Be on-site at all times during construction, or maintain a roster and schedule additional monitors as needed.
  • Produce daily, weekly, and end-of-field reporting under the supervision of a Senior Archaeologist.
  • Maintain effective and successful communication with project team, co-workers, and clients.

Qualifications

  • Professional archaeological experience in the Southeast required.
  • Master’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field.
  • Current standing member of the Register of Professional Archaeologists (RPA) or qualified archaeologist under the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications for Archaeology (36 Code of Federal Regulations, CFR Part 61).
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and ArcGIS software.
  • Proficiency in utilizing GPS equipment to assist with site boundary delineations.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid driver’s license prior to employment and have and maintain a satisfactory driving record.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience as an archaeological field director or project manager a plus.
  • DOT and/or energy-related (FERC and/or Corps-regulated pipelines, transmission lines, etc.) experience a plus.
  • Experience in conducting Native American consultation a plus.

Work Environment and Physical Demand

  • Fieldwork involves long-term standing and frequent walking, exposure to adverse environmental conditions, and common hazards at project sites.
  • Must be able to carry, lift, and push/pull up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Must have the ability to see, smell, hear, talk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, twist, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, sit, stand, and walk.
  • Office work includes working with fingers by picking, pinching, typing, and grasping often with repetitive motion.
  • Must have visual acuity for viewing a computer screen, the ability to talk, hear, and sit for extended periods of time.

Benefits

GSA-rate mileage and per diem for the project location, as well as lodging, will be provided. One or more positions may be filled through this announcement. Although the monitoring program is project-based, the successful candidate will be considered for longer-term, permanent, and more senior roles. The position will include weekend and overtime work, and overnight travel will be required. Travel will typically be in Southeastern U.S.
