About the Role
The Professional Tutor will help students understand various subjects by assessing, assisting, and encouraging them through the learning process. This role supplements classroom teaching by reviewing course materials, explaining topics, and addressing student questions. The position reports to the Associate Vice President of Student Services.
Responsibilities
- Tutor students in college-prep (developmental) courses to remove deficiencies and prepare them for college-level, credit-bearing courses.
- Conduct one-on-one and small group tutorial sessions, with emphasis on study strategies and mathematics through College Algebra.
- Provide students preparing for placement tests (e.g., TSI) and program entrance exams (e.g., TEAS, HESI) with study resources and direction.
- Consult with students to identify academic needs and offer tutoring or resources to address them.
- Collaborate with faculty to assist students in completing assignments and meeting course objectives.
- Maintain records of tutorials as requested by the Learning Center Director or instructors.
Qualifications
- Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.
- Demonstrated proficiency in tutoring subject areas (A or B grades in relevant courses).
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous tutoring experience.
- Customer service experience.
- Computer proficiency.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to remain in a stationary position for most of the time.
- Occasional movement within an office to access documents or equipment.
- Constant operation of a computer and other office equipment (e.g., printer, copier).
