Professional Traffic Engineer

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed site plans for permitting packages related to the implementation of automated enforcement technologies and license plate readers.
  • Utilize industry-standard software and technologies to create accurate and comprehensive site plans.
  • Conduct field site visits to take precise measurements and determine optimal placement of equipment and traffic control devices in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) guidelines, state laws, and project requirements.
  • Conduct engineering and traffic investigations including school zone safety assessments, traffic impact studies, and speed studies.
  • Analyze and interpret traffic data and make recommendations for safety and operational improvements.
  • Submit or assist with the preparation of permitting packets and documentation for agency submittals.
  • Cook up with internal teams, stakeholders, and external agencies (e.g., local municipalities, state departments) to ensure alignment and compliance.
  • Prepare engineering plans, specifications, and recommendations for traffic-related projects.
  • Facilitate and participate in project meetings with stakeholders to discuss findings and requirements.
  • Assess sites for optimal power availability for electrical utilities and solar applications.
  • Apply a thorough understanding of civil and traffic engineering principles to ensure safety and efficiency across all projects.

Qualifications

  • Education & Experience: Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering or related field from an accredited university. Possession of a valid Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Tennessee. Minimum of five (5+) years of progressive experience in traffic engineering and permitting processes.
  • Skills: Civil and traffic engineering principles and practices, Traffic safety and operational analysis, Engineering investigations and traffic data analysis, Site plan development and permitting processes, Proficiency with MUTCD standards, Strong communication and interpersonal skills, Problem-solving and analytical thinking, Proficiency with relevant CAD, Auto Cad, engineering software and technologies, Project management and documentation.

Top Skills

  • Willingness to obtain professional licenses in states as needed.
  • Possession of the PTOE designation.
  • Experience developing site plans for automated enforcement technologies and license plate readers.
  • Experience conducting traffic impact studies and safety audits.
  • Existing professional engineering licensure in multiple states.

Reporting Relationships

  • This role reports directly to the Vice President of Field Operations and collaborates regularly with project managers, the Director of Field Operations, and the Vice President of Construction.
