Responsibilities
- Performs advanced specialty professional coding for complex surgical encounters and serves as a subject matter expert to support coding accuracy, reimbursement integrity, and regulatory compliance.
- Codes complex specialty surgical encounters and interprets operative reports and clinical documentation to assign accurate procedure codes.
- Applies advanced modifier logic and coding principles to ensure compliant and optimal reimbursement.
- Resolves escalated coding issues and ensures consistency in specialty coding practices.
- Supports coding accuracy and reimbursement outcomes through advanced coding expertise and collaboration with stakeholders.
- Partners with coding teams and operational stakeholders to resolve complex specialty coding issues.
- Clearly explains coding rationale and documentation needs to stakeholders.
- Applies expert judgment to resolve complex, ambiguous coding scenarios with minimal guidance.
- Owns resolution of complex coding scenarios with accountability and precision.
- Drives consistency and reduces variation in complex coding practices.
- Ensures coding outcomes support reimbursement, reporting, and compliance.
- Applies updated coding guidance and supports adoption of best practice.
Requirements
- 2 years of coding experience.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- AHIMA-RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator), AHIMA-RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician), AHIMA-CCS (Certified Coding Specialist), AAPC-CPC (Certified Professional Coder), AAPC-CIC (Certified Inpatient Coder), or AAPC-COC (Certified Outpatient Coder) certification.
Skills
Day-to-day work requires applying advanced specialty coding to complex surgical encounters; interpreting operative reports and clinical documentation to assign accurate surgical codes; utilizing modifier logic and coding principles to support compliant reimbursement; and resolving complex coding scenarios with consistency and precision.
Preferred Qualifications
- Surgical CPT coding experience preferred.
