About the role
The Professional Engineer (PE) 1 (Environmental) will investigate human exposure to hazardous materials, review workplans and reports, compile relevant data, evaluate inspection completeness, and provide recommendations to achieve a complete, scientifically defensible investigation and remedial program.
Responsibilities
- Investigate human exposure to hazardous materials
- Review workplans and reports to identify and address public health impacts from hazardous waste sites, petroleum spills, and contaminated areas
- Provide written comments to state and federal agencies and other concerned parties
- Ensure environmental samples are collected according to proper laboratory protocols and requirements
- Respond to reclassification requests and determine sampling/data adequacy regarding potential public health implications
- Make scientifically valid field observations and measurements as part of an exposure investigation
- Represent the Department at public meetings, community advocacy groups, and interagency meetings
- Communicate with the public and other agencies regarding exposures to toxic and hazardous materials
Requirements
- New York State Professional Engineer's license and current registration
- A qualifying bachelor's degree or higher in engineering as listed in the minimum qualifications
- One year of full-time engineering experience in sanitary, public health, or environmental engineering
- Experience with environmental investigation regulations and reading and understanding engineering plans, specifications, and reports related to environmental contaminants
- The ability to prioritize work, manage multiple projects, and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders
- Understanding of industrial control systems, operational technology, supervisory control, data acquisition systems, and their application in environmental exposure treatment
Qualifications
- Minimum qualifications: NY HELPS
- Transfer or reassignment: Current New York State Department of Health employee with permanent or contingent-permanent status as a Professional Engineer 1 (Environmental), Grade 24, OR a New York State employee with one year of permanent or contingent-permanent competitive service in a title eligible for transfer to a Professional Engineer 1 (Environment), Grade 24.
