About the Role

Provides counseling services to assist all students to identify, mitigate and/or remove barriers that impede their ability to reach their academic, career, and personal goals. Responds to crises and campus/college-critical incidents requiring services (e.g., classroom/group debriefing, supportive counseling). Responsible for a caseload of at-risk students and serves on a team of on-call counselors. Participates in summer Sea Term counseling aboard the Training Ship with the Maritime Academy.

Responsibilities

  • Direct Client Services
    • Provides mental health and wellness counseling services to all enrolled students, including intake and assessment, caseload management, and rotating on-call telephone responsibilities.
    • Serves as primary contact for community agencies such as Gulf Coast Services, Resources & Crisis Center, UTMB Family Services Clinic, Bay Area Council on Drugs and Alcohol, Ball High Teen Clinic, and National Alliance for Mental Illness.
  • Education, Program, and Event Administration
    • Develops and delivers wellness/mental health programming and educational opportunities to the campus community in collaboration with Student Affairs, faculty, Police Department, and external partners.
    • Leads or supports campus initiatives including Mental Health First Aid/101, Suicide Prevention Trainings, Title IX, and Health Fairs.
  • Department Administration
    • Assists the Director of Counseling with day-to-day office tasks such as managing office coverage, calendars, meeting agendas, updating the counseling website, and administering surveys/reports.
    • Represents the Counseling Department on assigned committees and groups.
    • Maintains counseling files, guidelines, and confidentiality as required by licensure.
  • Professional Development and Other
    • Maintains professional licensure and training.
    • Encouraged to be an active member of a professional organization related to job duties.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in counseling, psychology, marriage and family therapy, or social work.
  • Practical/field placement relevant to college counseling or supervised experience related to job function.
  • Counseling licensure (e.g., LPC, LCSW, LMFT, or Licensed Psychologist).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of three (3) years of job-related experience.
  • Doctorate in Counseling, Psychology, or a related specialty.

Skills

  • Working knowledge of database, spreadsheet, presentation, and word processing software.
  • Excellent interpersonal, writing, and verbal skills to build relationships across the campus and mental health community in the Galveston-Houston area.

Other Requirements

  • This position is security-sensitive and requires compliance with state and federal laws, as well as Texas A&M University System policies.
  • May work non-standard hours to support student/campus crises or events aligned with the counseling mission.

Pay

$47,158 annually
