Production Support Technician I

About the role

Production Support Technicians perform lay-up, braiding, and filament winding of composite materials in accordance with customer and company specifications while following company policies and using proper personal protective equipment. They assemble and make major assembly structures such as fuselage panels and bulkheads, and structural subassemblies such as rudders, flaps, and stabilizers. Technicians align parts on jigs using templates, molds, and fixtures, and perform minor part-fitting operations including filing, sawing, de-burring, crimping, trimming, framing, riveting, drilling, and reaming. They measure parts with micrometers and calipers to verify dimensions, modify assemblies to incorporate changes, and may monitor and verify quality in accordance with statistical process or other control procedures. Additionally, they assist in day-to-day production operations and perform manual and clerical shipping/receiving duties using hand trucks, forklifts, and computers to maintain data.

Responsibilities

• Bond a variety of dissimilar materials (composite, metal, or laminate) into semi-finished or finished products using liquid or solid bonding agents.
• Operate autoclaves, hydraulic presses, and ovens to complete bonding cycles, controlling heat, pressure, and timing.
• Sand, burr, and smooth areas, applying sealing resins to cut or exposed edges.
• Monitor and verify the quality of finished products and complete repairs using inspection and rework instructions.
• Identify different process materials, prepregs, adhesives, and resins.
• Assist with cutting and kitting materials, completing lay-ups using measuring instruments per shop orders, blueprints, or laser ply projectors.
• Vacuum bag basic shapes and sizes and assist in loading autoclaves and/or ovens using forklifts, cranes, or handling carts.
• Assemble and fit pre-fabricated metallic and composite parts to form assemblies, interpreting aircraft assembly instruction plans, diagrams, and drawings.
• Assemble, fit, shim, and install pre-fabricated parts and subassemblies such as aircraft spars, ribs, skins, and fittings using hand and power tools.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area and collaborate with the quality department to ensure production assemblies meet inspection procedures and specifications.
• Perform daily material handling activities, including managing transfer orders for material required by Operations using SAP transactions and reporting.
• Coordinate material transfers to and from Production Supply Areas, verifying accuracy and ensuring batch/lot control (FIFO).
• Maintain accurate inventory counts and transfer completed parts from Operations to Quality.
• Work exception reports to ensure production orders have materials charged correctly and are transferred to PSA’s prior to need.
• Work flexible hours to achieve daily departmental objectives, including frequent freezer entry and forklift operation for bulk material transport.
• Observe, support, and contribute to company safety programs, policies, and initiatives.
• Troubleshoot and assist in solving problems, driving continuous improvements in Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost.
• Maintain housekeeping and organization (5S) of the Shipping/Receiving area and ensure availability of supplies for material handling activities.
• Interact and coordinate activities with other departments.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or Associate’s Degree, or equivalent experience.
• Experience with SAP system functions/transactions and inventory systems and procedures.
• Ability to embody Albany Engineered Composites core values: Integration, Teamwork, Development, Quality, and Integrity.
• SAP skills and excellent communication/organization skills.
• Ability to safely operate a forklift and other material handling equipment.
• Above-average computer skills using SAP, Microsoft Office, RF Devices, and Shipping Systems.
• Highly organized with good attention to detail, self-motivated, and able to work independently.
• Proven problem-solving abilities and the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously while prioritizing work.
• Must be able to safely lift 50 lbs.

Working Conditions

• Indoor production environment; occasional outdoor work may be required.
• Occasional exposure to moderate noise and machinery with mechanical moving parts.
• Ability to work a 24/7 schedule and be available as business situations require, with overtime dependent on business need.

Physical Requirements

• Frequent repetitive hand movements using hand tools such as pliers, sanders, and scissors.
• Frequently remain in a stationary position up to 75% of the time.
• Frequent movement about the facility indoors and outdoors to perform tasks.
• Constant positioning to repair/build equipment and/or facility.
• Frequent ascension/descension of ladders to service equipment.
• Must be able to detect equipment issues and assess for repairs.
• Regularly move tools and equipment weighing up to or exceeding 25 lbs.
