Insteel Industries, established in 1953 and headquartered in Mount Airy, NC, is the nation's largest manufacturer of steel wire reinforcing products for concrete construction applications. We manufacture and market prestressed concrete (PC) strand and welded wire reinforcement, including engineered structural mesh, concrete pipe reinforcement, and standard welded wire reinforcement. You understand the principles of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and can manage demanding manufacturing processes to produce wire reinforcement products for American infrastructure. You prioritize safety to achieve and sustain Zero Harm outcomes and serve as a role model and leader to peers and subordinates.

Position Snapshot

A Production Supervisor directs and coordinates manufacturing operations of a single shift to meet company objectives and standards. This includes overseeing employee relations, safety, quality, efficiency, quantity, training, and environmental compliance while coaching associates in continuous improvement. You will work to lower risk to As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) to achieve ZERO HARM—preventing injuries, illness, or negative impacts to employees, property, the environment, or the community. The role requires flexible hours, including days, afternoons, nights, weekends, and overtime as needed to meet production demands.

Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise assigned personnel on assigned shifts, coaching and supporting team members to reach their maximum potential.
  • Oversee employee relations, housekeeping, safety, production issues, training, and cost management for the shift.
  • Prepare for shifts by checking production conditions with the previous shift’s Production Team Leader, reviewing orders, and scheduling production on machines.
  • Ensure adequate material supplies for shift operations and conduct pre-shift meetings, including checking for absentees, distributing job assignments, and communicating plant goals or concerns.
  • Prepare daily reports (production, employee counseling, purchase requisitions, work orders for maintenance) and support/administrate policies to promote a positive environment.
  • Comply with Oracle and Maximo system requirements and lead the training and development of new team members.
  • Step in to perform operator duties when necessary to support production demands and staffing requirements.
  • Maintain a strong presence on the shop floor (~70% of the workday) to support operators, address issues, and drive operational efficiency, with the remaining 30% dedicated to administrative tasks.
  • Act as a designated First Aid responder, providing assistance during workplace incidents and emergencies.
  • Conduct cycle counts and coordinate scrap and inventory-related functions to maintain accurate inventory.
  • Monitor materials used in production, adjust computer system entries as needed, and provide additional training on the computer system.
  • Conduct visual inspections of the plant to identify and correct potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Enforce the use of safety equipment, conduct accident investigations, and recommend policy/procedure changes to prevent accidents and illness.
  • Lead toolbox safety/information meetings.
  • Collaborate with the Quality Assurance Department to review test results and ensure only top-quality products are produced.
  • Monitor the quality of finished products and work-in-process throughout the shift, making adjustments as needed for improvement.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of previous work-related experience.
  • Above-average interpersonal skills with the ability to coach and develop individuals.
  • Steel wire manufacturing experience preferred but not required.
  • Professional or technical degree preferred (e.g., 2-year Associate Degree).
