About the role

The Fabrication & Sheet Metal Supervisor is responsible for the daily leadership, safety, quality, productivity, and performance of the Fabrication and Sheet Metal departments. This hands-on leadership position spends most of the workday on the shop floor directing employees, monitoring production, resolving issues, and ensuring work is completed safely, accurately, efficiently, and according to schedule. The Supervisor must possess strong technical knowledge of architectural metal fabrication and sheet metal operations; however, the primary responsibility of the position is leading people and production.

Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise Fabrication and Sheet Metal employees, providing daily direction, priorities, and performance expectations.
  • Maintain a visible shop-floor presence and hold employees accountable for safety, quality, productivity, attendance, conduct, and schedule performance.
  • Plan and assign daily work based on production schedules, workload, employee capabilities, and required completion dates.
  • Review drawings, job requirements, materials, and production priorities to ensure work is ready to proceed.
  • Monitor job progress and proactively address labor, material, equipment, quality, or workflow issues that could impact production.
  • Ensure work meets approved drawings, specifications, tolerances, quality standards, and customer requirements.
  • Promote first-time-right quality and take corrective action to reduce defects, scrap, rework, and material waste.
  • Ensure employees follow Company safety policies, PPE requirements, safe work practices, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Coach, train, develop, and evaluate employees and provide timely feedback regarding performance.
  • Address attendance, performance, conduct, and policy concerns promptly and consistently, including corrective action when appropriate.
  • Participate in interviewing, hiring, onboarding, training, performance management, and other personnel decisions in partnership with management and Human Resources.
  • Develop technical and leadership depth within the departments to reduce reliance on individual technical experts.
  • Monitor labor utilization, productivity, overtime, equipment usage, and departmental efficiency.
  • Lead daily production huddles and communicate priorities, staffing needs, safety concerns, quality issues, and schedule risks.
  • Partner with Operations, Engineering/Drafting, Project Management, Purchasing, Finishing, and other departments to maintain efficient production flow.
  • Identify opportunities to improve safety, quality, workflow, productivity, and cost performance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Plant Manager.

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of experience in architectural metal fabrication, custom metal fabrication, sheet metal manufacturing, or a related environment.
  • 2–3 years of direct supervisory or people-management experience in a manufacturing or production environment preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise hourly employees, coach performance, address employee issues, and hold employees accountable.
  • Strong knowledge of fabrication and sheet metal processes, equipment, tooling, and materials.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings, shop drawings, blueprints, and fabrication details.
  • Strong understanding of safety, quality, production scheduling, workflow, and labor planning.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organization, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Experience with Lean manufacturing, 5S, or continuous improvement practices preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical education or training preferred.

Physical demands

  • Regularly required to talk and listen.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, handle or feel, as well as reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • Must frequently lift and/or move up to twenty pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to see and differentiate color and to focus.

Working environment

This position operates primarily on the shop floor with some time spent in a professional office environment. Will require frequent movement between controlled temperature, office environment, to temperature extremes of a metals manufacturing plant.
